Random boggin out - will not start for a while
03/21/25 at 15:00:16

Hi guys - I need your help ...

Im so sad i cant help my son with this - his Savage has this weird problemthat after driving for a while it suddenly stalls (like if out of gas or no ignition) however - it will not start again until maybe one hour later ...

I thought it was his coil that failed when hot and it measured 39k ohm and the one from my savage was around 19k - so we swapped ... and yeaaahhh all good - he drove around for like 2-3 hours - was in the gym and after 3km it died ....

Im really totally blank to what to look for ...if it was fuel related why would it start perfectly fine later and run for random period...

I guess ill check if valves are within specs - did replace camchain etc last year ..

Bike ran perfectly fine all season last year

If it still has the factory petcock, try switching it to the PRI position next time it does that. If the bike starts then, replace the petcock.

Gas cap vent could be stuck or clogged and causing a vacuum lock in the gas tank.
Next time it happens, remove the gas cap to see if letting air into the tank allows it to start.

Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut between the seat and the handlebars. Make sure yours isn't too tight or too loose.

Thanks - Unfortunately pri doesn't work on this bike it works exactly like the others , requiring vacuum to let fuel out.... I discovered when I had to empty tank.

But we will try putting my tank over on his ... and see ...

Today it ran like 5 minutes and bogged out and refused to stay no matter what we did...I really hope it's the petcock...

But just weird it works for hours fine ... And then totally random dies

Thanks good advice ! But yes I tried starting it without the cap on ... No difference...

That's the problem if I just knew what to fix - I can fix it ... But I'm rather clueless...

So we have swapped the coil, and now we will try swapping the tank first, and then carb ...from my bike to his and see

PRI requires vacuum to allow gas to flow???  Very strange.
One other thing you can try to diagnose the problem.
When it dies, open the bowl drain on the carb.  If nothing, or little, comes out, you definitely have a fuel flow problem.
Could be petcock, float valve, that little screen on the fuel inlet.
Swapping out the tank is a good place to start.
It's great to have two bikes that are the same.  Really helps with troubleshooting.

the petcock has a metal finger that when turned to prime pushes the diaphragm to open the petcock.
it's only held in place by friction I believe.

this petcock really is a can of worms that's best fixed by replacing with a manual one.

Someone will shame me for buying a knock-off Raptor petcock valve, but I've had good experiences with this one on the Savage.  For $17 it worth a shot.  Got me up and running on 2 bikes I bought in non-running condition.

It's manual gravity fed (like PRIME setting on the stock petcock), so you have to cap off the vacuum line on the carb (you won't need it).
