Shot by a guy on an e-bike. Better than anything you'll see on the "real" news stations.

I've seen a bit of tornado damage, some flood damage, individual structure fires, but such broad, total destruction? That is Hell on earth.

we see that everyday, all day, every news station.

the palisades are so much worse, whole neighborhoods burned.

and we're lucky it wasn't worse, and the palisades are on the coast.

People Say
I can't Imagine!
I avoided living where Needing four wheel drive was just reality. As a young person I was in Oklahoma on and off. Tornado alley,Naah,, We have them occasionally, but in twenty years I haven't seen any very close. A hurricane Could get this far north, about 300 miles north of Galveston,, ..
I can't imagine living where fire is such a huge threat. If they would stop the stupid, clear dead wood, clean up brush and cut fire breaks, this annual insanity could be handled a lot better.

what's a fire break to a 70mph wind? good thing hawaii is so far away.

did you know the sands from the sahara are carried across the atlantic on the wind?

fire breaks around properties should be the width of the disk, Mathis plow (3 to 5 feet), or blade (6 to 12 feet). These widths are usually sufficient to contain most creeping or slowly moving ground fires, but will not stop crown fires.

California acreage      wilderness:15,346,666      total:100,206,720

How do you maintain 15 million acres?

I know! GPS collars on goats. Control them like drones.   Grin

Yes we need to RAKE California , then burn it. Put our prison population and homeless to work. And that’s not how urban renewal is supposed to work. But it’s definitely a massive disaster affecting thousands of people for a long time. In turn we will all have to pay one way or another for the recovery !

Fire breaks used to be common. It's good policy. Keeping the dead wood out, Limiting the fuel. Those are good policy ideas. It doesn't Immunize against fire, but handling a fire that has immense fuel, fuel that shouldn't be there, but lefty, tree hugger decisions caused..
If that was Never the policy, it needs to be,
Put some people to work. The cost of the way things are being done is insane.

Might be a good start for deciding how big a fire break needs to be.

People have forgotten that the LA basin by rainfall totals , it is a desert ! If they didn’t steal water from everyone , they would have none ! Only water they get is runoff when it does rain.

And That they squandered That water, pretending it's More important to divert it to Save the Snail Darter, and left reservoirs empty meant they didn't have squat.
Nobody suffers in sending the water to South California. Nobody is getting life saving water stolen. The system was Designed to direct it to California years ago. Water that came down out of the mountains and just went to the ocean was captured and directed. There are no victims. Well, not until idiots got in control and decided to allow it to go to the ocean, instead of crops, reservoirs,

Here in the Netherlands, which is largely below sea level, we had enormous flooding due to a combination of a heavy storm and spring tide in 1959. The damage and the number of deaths was humongous. We still talk about it now as "The Disaster".
Since that moment, billions have been invested to prevent a recurrence.

No expense or effort has been spared, and it is truly impressive when you see what has been built to keep the sea at bay.

I am certain that if everyone is on the same page, you can prevent this kind of disaster in the future. But I do hold my heart for the people who have now lost everything. It takes so much strength and help from outside to get over this and I hope it,s available.

The fires are likely not natural - they are probably man made.

I have read several reports that homeless encampment fires were a possibility.....and there is always the potential for folks just wanting to be mean and cause pain and suffering.

There were two fellows caught recently starting fires.  Here is a video of one of them caught in the act.
