Last year I followed the browser wars and the very slow death of Intel. This year I will follow the rise of ARM on PCs and laptops and follow the struggles of AMD and Intel to even try to remain relevant at all in the larger picture.
Qualcomm will face off with NVIDIA and MediaTek on the ARM front and against AMD and Intel on the x86 side of things. Watch AMD team up with Intel to make a common x86 front to combat a natural conglomeration of various ARM chipset builders. NVIDIA plus others will eventually make up the competing camp, all running ARM based solutions.
"Personally, I think a renovated ChromeOS powered by MediaTek chips (which tend to allow lower pricing) and infused with AI features already found in Pixel smartphones could outflank Microsoft’s blundering attempt to add AI to Windows PCs"==================================================
“Intel and AMD have demonstrated they can put a competitive offering out there that’s x86-based,” says Lee. He points out that Intel’s new Lunar Lake chips and AMD’s new Ryzen AI line are highly competitive with Qualcomm on performance and battery life.==================================================
The year will also see an OS war as MS Windows isn't going to rank very well in supporting a large new crop of ARM chipsets.
Linux as an OS is going to begin to flex its muscles with Linus simply saying what he is going to support and what he isn't going to put up with. Look to see Google come more into prominence as Chrome and Google OS show signs of merging into one relatively more powerful OS.
Look for first mover advantage and close relationships with TSMC to become very important. Team building and new group strtengths will outweigh old out of date laurels.
Apple is still a wild card as Apple could easily take over a large chunk of things as Apple has the relationships and skill-sets to do so already.
My read right now is that Intel simply cannot go it alone as they are running on strike # 3 right now.AMD would do well to get into Nvidia's team and to stay close friends with TSMC.
