ANSI Z87 Eyewear

Does anybody use ANSI Z87 eyewear (impact protection standard)?

I always wear a helmet, open face, with a visor.  I know a full face helmet generally provides better protection, but hang with me here.  It gets pretty hot in Texas.  I generally don’t lower the visor until I hit about 50mph.  I like the breeze on my face up to that point.

I usually wear my single vision sunglasses when I ride.  Yesterday it was mostly overcast and I wore my no-line bifocals (premium progressives actually).  That was a bit different in itself even if I wasn’t trying to use the reading portion of the glasses.  You get used to certain things, ya know…. Well, I caught a big-A$$ bug in the left lens.  Left a tiny hairline crack at the edge by the frame.

It got me to thinking that I should get some single vision sunglasses with ANSI Z87 lenses.  I’ve caught a few bugs in the lenses doing about 50mph with the visor up, and wapp, plap, splat!  We’ve got some big Texas-sized bugs down here!

Anybody using ANSI Z87 lenses?  They cost a little more, but I’m thinking they are probably worth it.

This really depends on how you value your vision.  This is my opinion.

I've seen standard lenses take out eyes on motorcycles and one even on a human riding in the back of a truck.  By "seen" I mean specifically the treatment process and not the incident itself.

Take the additional cost of the ANSI Z87 and decide if your eye is worth it.  If you were to lose vision, or partial vision in an eye - would you pay the cost of an ANSI Z87 lens to get that vision back?

If yes - then they are worth it.

If no - then they are not.

I agree!  I’m trying to find a retailer now.  Both of the places I usually get glasses and lenses from don’t make ANSI Z87 prescription sunglasses.  You can find the frames about anywhere; it’s the prescription sunglasses part that’s a little more elusive.
