All,

I have been running my mouth about this bike on Facebook, guess I should write something here too.
I love it! The rattling I reported some time ago was probably part from the starter relay, part from the tank not mounted right. It is gone now, and the bike sounds good.
Perhaps it can be made better by performing a clutch mod, similar to the one well documented for the Vstrom engines. I did one such mod for a friend, and he said it was a rebirth for his bike.
As you see, there is not a whole lot of the original bike left, apart from the frame, hubs, engine and headlight.
I changed the wiring to one I based on the Mo-Unit and it is wonderfull, because this unit is a computerized multi relay handling all the lights, horn and starter.
I also fitted a Velona "Daytona" odometer/tach which is great because it has odometer and 2 trip counters. I use one for fuel, the other for oil. That is a big help, since I tend to not take notes, and thus really not know when to fill up gas, or change oil.
Ignition system is Ignitec which is equally great because it comes with software, so I can set my own ignition advance curve as well as a rev. limiter. At present, it is set to 6500 Rpm, and at that setting I clocked 154 KMH and that equals 95.6 mph, so if I allow the engine to go to 7000 rpm, The bike will do the magical 100mph, which is my goal.
I will probably even fit the Kawasaki pulley mod and then we will see....

I have to go to Germany to test this out, or else risk severe retaliation from the police if I get caught doing it here in Denmark.
The tires Dunlop TT100 3.6-19 front, 4.1-18 rear has sorted any tendency to wobbeling, so I feel safe whan going a bit fast.
Engine pulls well, puddeling around between 2500-3500rpm, but at 4500rpm it starts to pull really strong, all the way to 6500 when the limiter kicks in, but I will set it higher soon.

The forward leaning engine saves my day, and it will be obvious to many of you, that I have payed attention to your builds.

Thanks a bunch for the inspiration, all of you! (no one mentioned, no one forgotten, you all know who you are)

I have been going for a look that would resemble the British singles of yore, and with balance shaft, e-starter and an extra 150cc, what is not to like?

In the future I want to fit bigger valves, I have some oversized Honda CB350 valves, 35mm. They may need bigger seats, that should be fun. Then there is the 20deg downward slanted carburettor which will solve a lot of the problems associated with the short side turn in the inlet, and should provide for a substantially higher flow. Looking forward to doing that mod.
And then tidy up the sidecovers, that seems like the biggest challenge of them all.

1000000 $ question: How high did you rev this engine, without it sticking it's one leg out the crankcase ?

Bike looks great....glad it is running with the same amount of "greatness"!

It is nice to see bikes that have changed from "project" to "completed project" and are getting hours on the road.

I had mine to 101.1mph (GPS confirmed) twice with the 95mm Wiseco and a year between attempts.  The bike is quick, to 80, takes a bit longer to 90mph.....the path to 101.1 seems to take a very long time, and the chassis likes to get wobbly at that speed.

I have not made any attempt with the new Flat Top Wiseco - like your situation these attempts are a bit scary as I was going twice the posted speed limit.

Lovin your hotrod Finn.  It looks great.

Are you running the new OEM cylinder you bought, or does it still have the one you honed out?  If you installed the new cylinder, was there a big reduction in audible noise?

How is your fuel economy?

How do you like that muffler?  Are you pleased with the exhaust note?  The head pipe looks perfect, I imagine it makes nice power around 3500 to 4000 rpm, right in the sweet spot where you cruise.

Please refresh my memory, what camshaft are you running?

Regarding "sticking one leg out the crankcase", I've had mine up to 8K a few times (only in 1st or 2nd gear).  Past 7K it's a futile effort, the motor is pretty much done around 6500.  It's nice that it still makes enough power to pull past 6500, but by then the power is dropping off so you are better off shifting the thing to the next gear.  I don't think the cylinder head can keep up past 6500.  I'm kind of amazed that the thing held together since it's not a performance engine.  The rod and crank aren't high-performance items.  I assume this is the "leg" you refer to.

BTW, as I recall you also did the high-speed pump drive.  Can you possibly share some rpm/temp/pressure/oil weight data for our reference.  Dave and I are currently evaluating our oil systems.  Additional data would be most helpful.

Very nice job on your cafe.  My compliments.  Cool

Dave, Mike, all:
Thank you for your kind words.
I have not had the urge to dismsntle the engine yet, so the NOS cylinder is still sitting on a shelf, looking for it's opportunity. Not likely to happen in the near future, since my next engine build will be 97mm flattop, which means I will have a cylinder rebored for that project. i am driving with an early DR650 cam, which will follow the new build.
Mileage is nothing to brag about, 55mpg with my driving style which means mostly under or at 3500rpm, with the occational surge to 5000rpm, for.the thrill of accelleration.
This does not bother me, although others get 65mpg, I am not going touring around the world, but rather just going trips of 30 miles, and trips to get an icecream.
The exhaust is wonderfull, with a full and deep note which drops slightly when I roll off the throttle. It is not much, if at all, louder than stock, but as you perhaps remember, flows about twice as good as the stock one. And it _never_ fires back on me. Instead it sounds exactly like a real motorcycle should sound. It is a sound that makes me proud of the bike.
-Oh, and yes. "Sticking a leg out" is our term for a broken conrod. It really is remarkably slim, and I fear it could break, but with a 7000-7500 rpm limit, I feel assured it will be ok.
The work you and Dave are doing with regard to oil pressure and temperature is admirable, and I follow it with interest. However, I don't think I am going to contribute with data on that front, since my limited time available will be invested in more porting work, including bigger valves and multi angle valve seats. The various ratteling sounds from within the engine also draws my attension.
I will report about this work when I start it during the dark winter period.

Cheers, Finn Hammer
