All,
I have been running my mouth about this bike on Facebook, guess I should write something here too. I love it! The rattling I reported some time ago was probably part from the starter relay, part from the tank not mounted right. It is gone now, and the bike sounds good. Perhaps it can be made better by performing a clutch mod, similar to the one well documented for the Vstrom engines. I did one such mod for a friend, and he said it was a rebirth for his bike. As you see, there is not a whole lot of the original bike left, apart from the frame, hubs, engine and headlight. I changed the wiring to one I based on the Mo-Unit and it is wonderfull, because this unit is a computerized multi relay handling all the lights, horn and starter. I also fitted a Velona "Daytona" odometer/tach which is great because it has odometer and 2 trip counters. I use one for fuel, the other for oil. That is a big help, since I tend to not take notes, and thus really not know when to fill up gas, or change oil. Ignition system is Ignitec which is equally great because it comes with software, so I can set my own ignition advance curve as well as a rev. limiter. At present, it is set to 6500 Rpm, and at that setting I clocked 154 KMH and that equals 95.6 mph, so if I allow the engine to go to 7000 rpm, The bike will do the magical 100mph, which is my goal. I will probably even fit the Kawasaki pulley mod and then we will see....
I have to go to Germany to test this out, or else risk severe retaliation from the police if I get caught doing it here in Denmark. The tires Dunlop TT100 3.6-19 front, 4.1-18 rear has sorted any tendency to wobbeling, so I feel safe whan going a bit fast. Engine pulls well, puddeling around between 2500-3500rpm, but at 4500rpm it starts to pull really strong, all the way to 6500 when the limiter kicks in, but I will set it higher soon.
The forward leaning engine saves my day, and it will be obvious to many of you, that I have payed attention to your builds.
Thanks a bunch for the inspiration, all of you! (no one mentioned, no one forgotten, you all know who you are)
I have been going for a look that would resemble the British singles of yore, and with balance shaft, e-starter and an extra 150cc, what is not to like?
In the future I want to fit bigger valves, I have some oversized Honda CB350 valves, 35mm. They may need bigger seats, that should be fun. Then there is the 20deg downward slanted carburettor which will solve a lot of the problems associated with the short side turn in the inlet, and should provide for a substantially higher flow. Looking forward to doing that mod. And then tidy up the sidecovers, that seems like the biggest challenge of them all.
1000000 $ question: How high did you rev this engine, without it sticking it's one leg out the crankcase ?
