The oil pump driven gear was also in excellent condition. Screws tight. Gear teeth smooth. Fit on the pump shaft and drive pin was tight. Snap ring integrity good.

The clutch has performed flawlessly ever since I reinstalled the wave-washer and associated fiber plate. No squealing, grabbiness, etc. It handles the power with no indication of slipping. Operation is smooth with no drag. Neutral is always easy to find. I expected all the clutch components would be in good condition. But when I went to remove the hub, the nut was loose. I knew something was up.
The thrust washers had the same wear both Dave and I have encountered. Granted this was a very long test, but I would prefer that things stay tight. I probably should have been on a routine tightening regimen. I almost always remove the clutch cover when I do a service, so it would be a simple task to tighten the clutch hub nut.
The thrust washers were worn. I will have to replace them. This is the inner washer that resides up against the input shaft ball bearing.

This is the washer that resides within the clutch between the hub and basket.

The sleeve that runs in the bronze bushing was in great condition. No bronze deposits on the sleeve, so I am pretty sure that the grabby squealy problem is related to the basket binding on the sleeve. The wave washer has fixed that.

The back of the clutch hub was scored. I assume that could be attributed to the loose nut, but it’s a chicken or egg problem. Did the nut loosen and allow relative motion between the thrust washer and hub, or did the washer fret away and relieve the preload resulting in a loose nut. I contend we will never know. Just gotta routinely tighten the nut. You can also see that the steel insert on this ancient DR hub is starting to separate.

You can see the insert separation from this side too. No easy fix for this, just gotta run it till it gives up.

I popped off the head cover to get a look inside. The camshaft looked the same as it has for the last 81K. There are some micro-pits in both lobes, but they have stayed the same for years. No problem with the cam.
Here is a look at the intake lobe.

This is the exhaust lobe. It’s just a bit worse than the intake, but still in pretty good condition as far as I’m concerned.

The cam followers on the rocker arms also looked good. I suspect these have somewhere close to 80K on them. They have been used with various cams (stock, DR, & Web 402).

The right-hand exhaust valve adjuster screw had some pitting on the tip.

But the right-hand exhaust valve tip looked just fine, as did the remaining three valve tips.

Throughout the test of the oil system, the valves never needed to be adjusted to correct a loose condition. If adjustment was needed, it was due to insufficient clearance. That indicates that there is almost no wear taking place on the cam lobes, cam followers, adjustment screws, or valve stem tips.
This is a shot of the adjustment screws for the intake valves.

As you can see from the previous photos, the cam journals looked excellent, and so did the cam bearings in the head cover. The cam bearings in the cylinder head were also in good condition. The measured clearance between the cam journals and cam bearings was just under .002”, well below the service limit of .006”.

There are narrow polished circumferential bands on the center cam bearing and right-hand steady bearing. It appears there is some edge loading taking place. I’m not sure why, but it doesn’t seem to be causing any significant distress.

The cam chain tensioner was extended 15mm. It rarely needs attention. I adjust it about every 3rd service interval.
