My new ride.
06/19/23 at 05:19:43

I bought a savage last week. It is from 1991, first owner, with approximately 5300 miles on the clock. 300 bucks,- Smiley

It has stood still for a long time in a damp shed and she has quite a bit of oxide.
The engine runs like a charm. Smiley

The outside needs some TLC Kiss, but, I have a problem.

The fuel cap lock will not open. Sad

I've had it in the penetrating oil for a five days now, and the pins of the lock seem to be free, but I can't get it to open.

How to get the lock working again?

And what is the best way to break open the lock if nothing works anymore?

Wow! Great buy!!! If the key is turning properly in the gas cap and gas cap will still not release I would guess the gas cap may be rusted on the gas tank neck. Keep squirting WD40 (or other) under gas cap and occasionally tap with a rubber mallet. Good luck!

Turn the key , push down on the cap not on the key , lightly jiggle the key.
Like he said it might be rusted , be patient , keep at it. For $300 you should have a lot of patience , sweet deal.

I helped my brother out with a badly stuck gas cap, I hope yours is better.

filled the keyway with pen oil for 2 days, refilling when empty. trying the key periodically.
then pressed a sealing washer on top and used air pressure to blow the oil into the lock.
after 2 days, I got the cap out and it really looked like crap, a lot of varnish and corrosion.
1 full cleaning later and it sorta worked, too much corrosion to work smoothly.

the rubber seal might be hard, push down on the cap while turning the key.

Wow, Those are motivational tips, I really appreciate it.Tanks.

Literally everything is stuck, it's worse than grandma's bowel movements.

I sprayed everything again with real dw40, up and under and taperdy tap tap tap tap with a rubber hammer from all sides and let it rest tonight.Tomorrow morning I'll hit it again with the compressor in the keyhole and see what happens.

I'll lkeep you posted...
I'm sure you have as much patience as I do.

@Ruttly
There is old gas in the tank and when I open the fuel tap, it smels realy bad. So I think I,m in for a thread.

First thing this morning I took te compressor and blown te key hole. Only WD40 came out. The key does not want to turn, not even a tiny bit.
I,v put new WD40 in there and give it more time.

I ordered a Raptor and hope te cap is off by the time it gets here.

Edit:

I put a large screwdriver in the keyhole. And tried to turn the lock. I heard the magic click.

The key now turns all the way! Cheesy

I put a big pair of pliers on the cap with a cloth around it so as not to damage anything.

And now there is also a bit of movement in the cap itself. Smiley

The tank isn't opening yet, but we're getting there.

Let us talk about Zevenenergy, a fearless and determined individual who has diligently followed all the instructions but, alas, has not been able to loosen his fuel cap.

But fear not, my friends, for the Savage Forum holds the key. Zevenenergy has faithfully followed every clue and guidance, yet the cap remains stubbornly stuck. Now, he seeks the wisdom and expertise of the esteemed members on the forum, for their collective power knows no bounds.

Together, we shall rise above this challenge and unlock the freedom that awaits.

Like I Donald Trump delivering a resolute speech, Zevenenergy's perseverance shall inspire us all.

Tank-s

Lets bless me.

A great way to open things that don’t want to open.
Of course, you will have to clean up afterward.
Amount of cleanup work = amount of explosive used.
