Smoke from the top of the engine, burnt oil
04/21/23 at 18:04:14

When it rains it pours. With all the issues I've been battling there is now another one. Took the bike for a short ride to the store, and when stopping I notice smoke in front of my headlights. Got home, got the flashlight to try and find the source of the smoke. Seems to be smoking from the cavity at the very top of the engine, where the chrome cover is. The smoke has a distinct burn oil smell.

Any ideas for me?

can be a number of places, besides the head plug, there are several sealing washers and the valve inspection ports too.

take the chrome covers off and clean the engine.
then you can try this...

I did some more investigating to find where the smoke is coming from. There is a nut that lives in front of the engine, right underneath the head , and it looks like the smoke coming from this nut. Its all crusty and greasy, but there is no oil anywhere else on the engine, so whatever little sips through pretty much burns off on the nut itself, and produces a little bit of smoke.

I don't know if there is any other source for the burnt oil smoke on top of the engine, but if anything its probably no big deal.
