Sounds like you're speaking from experience, lol. Granted, I don't have much experience with motorcycles, but out of four bikes I have the Savage has by far the worst battery box design that is the most pain in the ass to access.

That being said, years back I had a 2005 Ford E350 cargo van with the cursed 6.0 diesel. It actually had two batteries, inside two underbody compartments that were a pain in the ass to access, and the cables connecting the batteries had absolutely zero slack. When it got flooded by the hurricane Sandy, it took a good 2 hours to replace these batteries. I'd say the design is 10 times worse than the Savage, but its kind of apples to oranges comparison.

It's not great.  I've seen better.  Remove toolkit cover followed by backing plate behind toolkit cover?  Not intuitive.  I've never investigated how to remove the actual plastic battery box, and I hope I never need to.  The two screws on top of it holding the lid are apparently only tightened by a 90 degree screwdriver if the tank isn't off.  I agree, it *could* be worse.

Connecting wires to the battery is a pain, and using any kind of jumper cables is even worse, there is virtually no room to clamp the jumper wire to the positive terminal without touch the frame and causing a short.

The *one* thing the previous owner did right for me was install a battery tender pigtail.
