#$!#% Belt - Dealer???
02/20/23 at 14:21:25

I bought this low-mileage 2012 last November.  I'm finally getting around to working on it.  When I removed the rear wheel, I saw that the belt had a nice burn down the center of it.  Somebody had dropped a battery screw in the front sprocket cover and never fished it out.  It lodged in there and rubbed on the belt.  Now I need a new one.  Has anybody had success getting one for a good price other than at a dealer?  The one I just saw from Oneida Suzuki was $236.  I'm also annoyed that I have to remove the sprocket to replace the belt.  Why couldn't they have put a touch more clearance in there?  Thanks.

I have been able to get good used ones on eBay very affordably.

Not all of them are in good shape or good deals...you have to watch and wait for a good one.

How deep is the cut? If is just on the surface 1/16'' or so it won't bother the kelvar cords, post a picture. If the cut was across the belt, that would be bad.
Also, there are several ways to hold the pulley from turning, but a electric impact is the best. Zips it off in about 5 seconds.

I was just about to post a picture.  You read my mind.  I was wondering what the jelly in the sandwich was.  It's Kevlar!  The channel that lodged screw caused is throughout the belt.  Thanks for the reply.  I'll edit my first post to include a picture.

Thanks!  I'm glad the marketplace is active.  I hadn't thought of that.

The kelvar cords run length ways inside the belt. You do not appear to have touched them. ( you can see them from the side )
I would not be worried about the belts strength. The mark is just surface ulgy.
I would put it back on and take a glance at it each time you gas-up to ease your mind.

I have two used belts - one of them has not been removed from the bike (so unknown condition).  I can send you pics of their condition tomorrow.

Thank you, BadWolf.  I might just do that.  The prospect of removing the front sprocket is unpleasant.  I can't believe Suzuki couldn't put another few mm clearance so that you could replace a belt easily.

I'd run it. Snot pretty, but it's not compromised.

Well yes,,yes it does..
Have you solved the clearance issues so it doesn't make it any better?

It was caused by a screw I found that somebody dropped in the pulley guard and never bothered to fish out.  I bought this bike last November and am just starting to fiddle with it.
