18 inch Rear Wheel
01/18/23 at 18:02:24

Will be throwing on an 18 inch rear wheel from a '77 GS550 to raise the hardtail clearance a bit. I wanted to ask if anybody knows what this notch is for (circled in pic) or how its supposed to be used? The drum cover is held firm in place with a bolt/cotterpin thru the hole. Been searching online all day but can't quite seem to find the right pic/diagram. Thanks for the help!

Cable operated rear drum? Anchor point for cable?

It's my understanding that the 550 has a solid brake linkage and not a cable. But I see what y'all mean about the cable stop. Thanks again!

There is a tab on the inside of the swing arm.  If that is the Suzuki Savage part, that slot goes over the tab and prevents the part from rotating while the brake is applied.

Slot B
Tab A is on the swingarm.

Except that is NOT a savage part. It's from a 1978 Suzuki GS550. I am familiar with the savage frame tab into the rear brake hub slot.

Apples/Oranges parts interchange.....but you likely can make it work.

The Suzuki Savage has a cable brake.  The outer cable goes to a tab on the frame on the savage....the inner cable goes back to the brake arm.

On the GS550 the outer cable went to the tab on the rear brake plate, the inner cable went to the brake arm.

if you are lucky you can leave the Savage brake cable in place and leave the outer cable attached to the bracket on the swing arm.  The inner cable hopefully can operate the arm on the GS550 brake....you may have to move the arm on the spline to make it line up properly.  (That extra bracket on the GS550 brake plate will not be used and can be removed.

AND....the Suzuki Savage has a tab on the swing arm that engages into the rear brake plate to stop rotation....the GS550 has a link that bolts to the brake plate and also bolts to the swing arm.  IF you use the GS550 brake plate you will need to fabricate this arm.  (Have you tried fitting the Savage brake assembly into the GS550 rear wheel?"  A lot of these parts are similar enough that they can be interchanged).

Dave - I very much appreciate your always complete answers!

Agreed on the apples to oranges. I also think I can make it work.

Fully understood on the Savage brake cable - I have a 2011 LS650.

Understood on the 550 brake cable too. Altho I have only seen rigid linkages for the rear drum brake, the inner and outer cable setup also makes sense.

I am hoping too that I can use the existing savage brake cable! Am thinking about grinding off the "notch" on the GS plate and polishing for a cleaner look.

Understood on the arm that keeps the hub from rotating. I have seen these clearly in other pics/videos online. Should be easy enough to add.

This whole journey with the 1978, 18 inch, spoked GS550 wheel started with me believing the savage brake assy would fit into the GS rear brake hub. Unfortunately, it was too small. Upside is the GS550 spoked rim brake drum parts are easy to find and fairly cheap.

THANKS!

Apples n oranges , potatoes n turnips
I know you can do it but if I gotta do all that , rework rear wheel and brake to fit , mod the swing arm. At that point I just get stupid and go for a spoked 18” with a disc brake , now there’s a project !
As you were , continue , a drum brake is all a savage needs.
Your gonna love the 18” wheel.
