I'd do the exploding hammer before  would run with a herd of bulls.

 It's not too crazy until you get to those multi-charge stacks taped on.

 On the bigger stuff you can see them dropping the hammer - this is most likely because too tight, or too sustained of a grip will break bones in your hand from the vibrating impact of that handle when that charge detonates.  

 It's much more dramatic seeing them hit that beam in the dirt as you can see so much energy transferred into the ground.  Much more dust kick-up than when they use a large rock.

I suspect all the charges are angled away from contestant in a manor to give a dramatic effect also creating a vacuum in hammer swing/hit area. Air rushing into that area would reduce shock wave in that area , very similar to the guy who would blow himself up in a wooden box and then walk away. If your not in that area that’s when as the shock wave passes thru you it turns all your insides into jelly right before it blows you into tiny manageable pieces.

Then what is that stuff taped to the Hammers ?   We can get stuff at the local gun shop to SHOOT with center fire rifles that blows up like that ... but I forget the name of it.
