Upgraded Cam
11/15/22 at 04:50:12

Hi
I saw somewhere in the forums a person offering upgraded cams, but I can't find it again. Anyone know who it is?

I pulled my top off and my rockers and cam are not looking to great.
Rockers seem they must be changed, thoughts on cam?
Thanks in advance.

I thought people maybe had been using DR650 cams with some added oil ports.

Maybe do a search for DR650 cam.

I'm not there, so, grab a grain of salt, but you Might be able to smooth the rockers out. IDK if that is a reasonable thing to even try. I'll wait for the real mechanics to flame me or agree. The cam is done. If you don't have a magnetic oil drain plug, now would be a good time to get one I'd say. I'd autopsy the oil filter and inspect the pump.
If anyone disagrees,I'd yield to that.
If it was mine I'd ask the guys here if I should pull the spark plug and put diesel in and spin it over. The reason I would consider that is there has been some tiny bits of steel circulating and I would think a flushing of the oil passages might be a good idea.
With the oil filter guts pulled out straight and a Good magnet you can see what it has captured. IDK what that would help, but I'd hafta see it.

Pre 95 dr650 cam works fine without oil holes drilled.

So I can't pm anybody cause I am new here 😑

I'm starting to look at DR cam shafts as they seem pretty good.
My bike is stock apart from a raask exhaust, unsure of carb jetting. So question is will I have to do anything to run the DR cam? A simple bolt in affair?
Will standard LS rockers work? Chain etc?
Great info here guys thanks

I think the rockers have done there job scince 87 but are now done. The cam I am unsure hiw bad it can be, but will change it anyway.
Once the motor is together and running I will flush it 2 or 3 times to check for metal fragments. Hopefully none!

From what I can see your cam bearing surfaces In the head are in good shape, and if the bearing surfaces in the head look the same then you are good with that as well.  Your rockers and cam are toast.  If the bearing surfaces of the cam itself are not damaged then it is usable for remanufacturing into a new cam.  The cam lobes can be hard welded but not bearing surfaces, that adds too much cost.
