Steam torque
11/06/22 at 04:19:46

This engine was cranking out 96 horsepower and 732 foot pounds of torque.

I haven't watched the video, I was just captured by the claimed numbers.
It's obvious I don't understand horsepower and torque.
That site has some neat equipment.

Would you be happier with 180HP and 5,000 ft/lbs of torque?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROv7wKFe5BM

Or would you prefer to see it pulling a 44 bottom plow?

Those steam engines were beasts. Before we discovered oil, they were lubed with hog fat from the butcher shop.

Okay, I Think it's starting to make sense.
HP = Work/Time. It's got all that torque, but unlike a Top Fuel dragster making 5,000 pound feet of torque, steam generates that enormous torque slowly. Work performed is Yuge, but the time it takes is a whole lot more than four seconds. So Big work over Long time is a low number of HP.
Right?

Yep....You got it!

Steam expands slowly in a cylinder compared to an internal combustion engine.  The large piston can move slowly and provide a large amount of work for the entire stroke......and the piston is double sided so it makes power going both directions (pull and push).  One of the comments in the first video I posted was that the piston has 24,630 pounds of force on the piston as a result of the 160psi steam pressure.

What initially bothered me was how could anything with that much torque be so low HP?
It took a day to get it to make sense.
Thanks for the replies.
And, yeah, that pressure x area equals force is a thing. Apump, fluid and a ram can do a lot of work.
The HP is Work over Time thing, I've known that since my twenties, but I think I'm just now starting to Reealy Grock it.

Just for the record, JoG...

Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall.

Torque is how far you move the wall.

Is it accurate to say
Horsepower is how fast you hit the car
Torque is how big of a dent you make?
Cuz I straight up wrinkled the hekkoutta that car.

Dave,I watched that video of the huge plow. I was really hoping to see him turn it around.
I'm gonna watch again and try to estimate how long it is.

Dave ,are you certain that is Just a 44 bottom plow? The camera panning makes it really hard for me, but I think it's got 25 handles.  But let's go with 44, the people are standing about three feet apart, feet wide enough to stay upright, call it22 handles, the gal on the end had two, I think, it's Gotta be a hunnert feet long, anyway, wouldn't ya think?
It's a good thing to get that many rows done in one pass. He's gonna be two hours turning around.  I wonder if it would speed up if everyone raised their plows,,

Jog....you are correct - it was a 50 bottom plow.

I initially posted a video of the 44 bottom plow, and then I found the 50 plow video.

I guess in those big western states they have plenty of room in the fields to make big turns!

Can you get a good enough view to estimate how long that thing is?
A fifty bottom plow has gotta be ballpark hunnert feet, wouldn't you think?
What a project, putting that together.
That engine is some kinda monster!
Thanks for the video.
