12v outlet issue
06/10/22 at 19:20:33

I installed a 12v outlet so I could use my tomtom nav unit.
The new outlet will run my tachometer, but it will not power up my nav unit.
-First pic shows my wiring connections. The white wires connect to my 12v outlet.
-Any ideas for getting my nav unit running from the 12v outlet? The nav unit works when plugged into the outlet on my 125cc scooter.

I'd have to guess your tomtom needs more juice.
So maybe you got corrosion in the connections or your tap is bad.

Wheelbender, is the white wire going to the bolt your ground for the outlet?  If so, that is a very poor location for a ground wire.  The bolt holds your plastic airbox to the frame.  The wire is pinched between the bolthead and the washer.  The washer contacts the plastic tab.  That's a terrible ground.  You need to secure the ground wire up hard against bare metal on the frame or engine.  Remove any paint so the wire is hard against the clean, bare metal.

Is this your ground for the outlet?  If so, you need to relocate the ground connection.

I should also add that the red wire that you tied into is unfused and also upstream of the ignition switch.  That's not a good place to tie in.  Your 12V outlet will always be hot, even when your ignition switch is "off", and there is no overcurrent protection.  That combination is a recipe for a fire.

Only thing worse than a Helmet fire is a Seat fire!

Are the brown wires in the upper right part of the pic switched wires?

Where do you intend to mount the outlet?  I assume up around the handlebar clamp.  I would tie into the hot wire for one of the front running lights.   Those wires are in the headlight.  On my 2016 it’s the grey wire to the turn signal assembly.  Use the black/white wire for ground.

They would be protected by a fuse and also would be controlled by the key so when the bike is shut down the outlet would be deenergized.  It’s also deenergized while starting.

I'm going to wire it to the horn. There is a good thread about that somewhere. There are so many wires in the headlight.
