Ah man! darn Cam Tensioner
02/20/22 at 16:22:18

Hello all. Bought this 1997 from someone about a few weeks ago. Reading through this forum, I noticed it’s a common issue with them when it reaches close to 20k miles. It has 18k miles now and I was curious so I took it apart and there you go. I counted the lines on it and it’s at 16. I posted the issue on the FB page and they recommended me to someone on here that mods it. I want to get this bike running perfect for my wife who never rode before and I don’t want to chase her away with thoughts of breaking down etc. I wanted to post pics but it doesn’t let me.

There appears to be 1 line per mm, and I'm assuming you mean a line is the notches on the bottom of the plunger.

This is close but not danger close.

I can’t send you a message. I have 2 cam tensioners. One is new. And the other one from the bike itself. I can send you either one. But I don’t know where to start.

Every twenty minute job is a stripped thread away from being a three day ordeal.

My tensioner is also 16 tooth out. If I put in a modified tensioner now, will the tensioner spring be too tightly compressed? Is it best to wait until 18 teeth are exposed?

16mm is right at the range where you can change it.
just make sure the pin isn't bottomed out in the slot.
