How cold is TOO COLD !
01/07/22 at 19:48:04

I took a lap around the "county block" last Wednesday afternoon when the temperature was a little warmer.   By time I got back I was wondering why I didn't bring heated gloves ?

so

Tomorrow we're getting up to 47F again ?  (or so the weather lady says).
so
How cold is "too cold" for you fellers ?

The quality of your gear determines what is too cold. I've ridden with snow on the ground. Would not do that now. Hurts too bad. Ten years ago, meh..

It really depends on how long your ride is.

If I want to go out and ride in cold weather and stay out a while.....I can.  It does however take a lot of clothing to stay warm enough to enjoy the ride.  Rides in temperatures below the 50's can be done - but it takes more than a normal amount of gear.

If I just need to ride up to the hardware store or a quick trip around the block to get "ride time" into my day - I can ride in pretty cold weather for a short period of time.

It also makes a difference if the sun is shining......and how windy it is.

Bottom "Rule of Thumb" for me:  Long rides for fun can be done as long as the temperatures will stay in the 50's.  Short rides for errands and a bit of seat time by taking a lap around the country block can be done as long as the roads are dry.....I have taken short rides in temperatures down into the 20's.  (Stewmills, his brother Bailey and I rode the Cherohala Skyway with temperatures in the high 20's).

My riding is done for the year.  Right now it is 10 degrees outside, and we got snow on Thursday/Friday and all the roads are now covered in de-icing salt.  The bikes will not be back on the road until the rains in March or April wash all the salt off the roads.

Battery powered gloves, socks, vest and wind-proof gear have drastically lowered my “too cold” floor. What hasn’t changed is my aversion to sand and salt on the road and riding on cold tires. So the battery gear keeps me on the road until they start spreading salt, and gets me on the road a few weeks earlier in the spring. I’m good down to about 40 I’d say. Any colder and I’m concerned about grip.

I’m ok for limited trips with temps of 50.
My fingers freeze up easily, it’s been that way my entire life.

Yea , on the salty roads thing ,  I wouldn't like that either.

We had "Brine" on the roads twice in the last week , but never get the REAL SALT

From what we've been seeing on TV in the last week or so ... Kentucky and the NEW ENGLAND states have really had a ruff way to go.

I'd think Versey , Spr,ingman and YouzGuyz  could ride year around .
The two years I lived in El Paso I rode all 12 month .  I'm too anchored where I'm at to move anymore and that's OK.

Well , the Gold Fish pond is still froze over so there may not be any Motorcycle ridding today ?  Sad
Heck !  I better go check on the Cow Pond !  Roll Eyes

Dave , your big pond should be froze enough to skate on !

We have lived on this property 24 years, and there have only been 3 or 4 times the pond was suitable for skating.  It has been many years since our pond has been frozen thick enough for us to skate on.  Also.......it is really rare that the ice freezes smooth and clean - most of the time it gets freezing rain and/or snow on top and make it impossible to use it for skating.

For perfect skating conditions we need the cold to arrive without snow or ice falling from the sky, and the temperature to stay really cold for a couple of weeks (10-20 degrees).

I'll ride in the 50's with heated & insulated gear plus an extra large windscreen.  I could probably tolerate lower temperatures but it's just not that much fun for me when it gets any colder.  YMMV

Yep, riding year around except you have to pick your direction wisely in fire and mud season.   Grin

40's in the morning may be followed by 80's in the afternoon.
but then it could be 100's by the sea and 70's in the mountains...
so take your pick.

For those of you in the south who don't really understand about the salt they spread on the roads to melt the snow and ice - here is a photo that shows just how out of control the folks spreading the salt can get.

We had about an inch of snow last Wednesday night.  This morning (Saturday) I needed to go to the Post Office and also pick up some groceries.  Last week this parking lot was black asphalt.....this week it looks like the Bonneville Salt Flats!  All that white color is salt - not snow!

Good Greif Dave !   I'd want my car made out of plastic or fiberglass to survive all the salt.

That salt in the parking lot look like our snow the day after !

Yep, riding year around except you have to pick your direction wisely in fire and mud season.

Hay I did get to go for a ride today !  Smiley

The sun came out and warmed us up to 51deg. , so I plugged  my gloves up and off I went for about an hour ride-a-bout .on the Guzzi (bigger windshield).
I'm going to try the "Hippo-Hands" on the Savage next time.
