I am not sure you need an entire head - the bearing might still be usable with a bit of cleanup. You really need to get it apart and cleaned up and check clearances. All year heads will fit all year bikes.

The majority of your damage seems to be confined to the steady bearing (on the right side of the drive sprocket).

Given that the cam steady bearing is the very last item in the flow path, the condition you have could simply be the result of attrition. If you had an oil supply problem in the feed to the top end, it stands to reason that the component at the end of the line would get the least amount of oil.

How much oil did you find in your top end, and where was the oil? The narrow reservoir on the right side of the cam (between the end of the cam and the rubber plug) looks dry. Was there any oil in that narrow reservoir?
Was the trough under the cam lobes full of oil?

Thanks for all the advice. As for some of your questions.
It did not look as oily in there as I have seen in heads of other motorcycle engines I have worked on. When I cranked the engine with the valve adjustment covers off, I could not see any oil flinging around or pumping in.
The only place that had a trough of oil was under the cam lobes. The high spots of the lobes dipped into that oil when I turn the engine by hand. There are no other pools of oil in the head.
I'm taking a few days off from tinkering, (wife's orders), but will check the cam oil feed hole and left cam bearing when I get back to things next week.
I agree, I do not want to install replacement parts if I have an oil supply problem.
I would like to test oil feed to head. If I crank the engine with the head cover off, at what rate and/or pressure should oil come out of the supply hole?

I ended up pulling the head. But before pulling, I checked oil flow to the head cover. Cranking the engine, The oil made it all the way to the to the top of the tube pictured, but with very little pressure. My guess is, no more than 1 psi. This may be normal for a Savage. I have owned other bikes with low pressure oiling systems.
I'm also questioning if the deformed O-ring pictured could be the culprit that screwed up the top end. Can it be replaced with a standard O-ring from a HF pack? I found 2 that seem to fit well.
