Tire choices in 2021
07/29/21 at 09:05:15

Does anyone have any good suggestions for tire choices these days? My local shop says the Metzeler 888's are now discontinued in our OEM size. My bike is bobbed and I'm a bigger guy, so going up to a 140/90 isn't really an option. My current thought is the Dunlop D404's in OEM size for the front and a 130/90-15 for the rear.  Is this a good idea?

A 130/90-15 is a great choice for a rear tire.....it is almost identical to the original 140/80-15.

If you only ride a few thousand miles a year - the Shinko tires are great.

If you ride a lot of miles - then a more expensive tire that will last longer makes sense.

The shop I went to recently had a hard time finding tire sizes (mostly the rear). They ended up securing a set of Bridgestone Battlecruise H50. The front was the same size, but the rear was a 140/75-15. I know they are better than the stock tire, but have not put enough miles on them to know the good and bad. The shop I went to wouldn't go bigger since they didn't want to deal with a clearance issue... I guess liability, not sure.

You get the most options when you go online - the sellers don't keep the tires in stock.....instead the tires are shipped from a warehouse near you.  It only takes a couple of days for them to be delivered.  Often I can order a tire today and it will be here tomorrow or the next day.

Here is the tire thread - the photos are mostly gone but it still shows you that you have a lot of choices.  The stock size of 140/80-15 is only made by one or two companies - 130/90-15 is the nearest size and is almost identical to the stock size.
