Connecting Rod Questions
06/20/21 at 16:16:53

Hi everyone, I have a 98 I’m getting running again. Bought it from a friend who didn’t k ow why it wasn’t running. Pulled it apart and turns out it had been run without oil. Bottom end is completely fine as are valves etc. The only issue was the piston froze in the cylinder and ruined both of them.

I was able to bore the cylinder for a 95mm piston. Connecting rod seems fine, though there’s a tiny bit of marring on one edge of the wrist pin mating surface. It may be two mill wide, I’m not sure if that’s gonna be an issue or not. Doesn’t seem to be protruding at all. If it’s a pressfit it’s not an issue, but I’m not sure if it is or not.

Also, there is zero twisting play in the connecting rod bearing, and there’s none up and down in the direction of piston movement. But there is a tiny bit of side to side play. Maybe 1 mil total. Is that normal because of the ball bearing? Or do I have a problem?

Thanks.

I don't see a limit for side to side play at the piston
but they list a conrod deflection as 3.0 mm and you can measure that at the small end.

I don't think 1mm at the piston is going to matter much.

Ok good. I wasn’t sure how tight the tolerances were. Do you know whether the wrist pin is pressed in to the conrod or if it’s free to spin?

Also, I realized I could just email you about the chain tensioner, so I did. Thanks!

I'd offer parts, but to far.

Oh, bummer. Well my plan for the time being is to get it running ASAP so I can ride it this summer. Just got my permit last week.

Then this winter I’m going to tear it apart, paint it and do the mods I have in mind for next summer.
