Suzuki ST 400 Tempter
05/12/21 at 00:21:47

Let me introduce myself, I am Klaas en I live in The Netherlands also known as Holland.

I found a  Tempter somewhere it has the wrong frontwheel but that does not bather me much.
This engine was imported from Ireland, at the moment it looks like it is the only one in my country (not sure)
I am trying to get it to run, wiring was a mess and some other problems.
Will ask questions later Wink

Our engine numbers start with P401-******
If it's the same, then it's a 650

Welcome, Im Swedisch and got my a 2000 LS 650 Savage.

It seams that tempter is a dual cylinder bike.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suzuki_GR650

But your bike seems to have our one cylinder 652 CC engine?

Its this, your frame looks different and perticulary the seat.

No Zepp, That is the GR650 Tempter that was sold in the US.  The ST400 Tempter was sold outside of the US and it is a 400cc single.

Well here is the answer, its areal 400.
I am just exploring the engine, never had such before and as I mensioned before there is nothing known about this type here.
I ride bikes for over 50 years and never seen one before.
I found 2 liters ! oil/gas mixture in the aircleaner house, nor normal !!
And I am still trying to get it ready for the inspection for registration.

We know a little bit about how the 400 and 650 engines are different.

They have the same stroke - but the 400 has a smaller piston bore.

The connecting rod is 1mm smaller at the top end - that prevents the 650 piston and cylinder from being a "bolt on" swap....you have to change the crankshaft as well (or just the rod but that is a lot of work and it is easier to get a used 650 crankshaft).

The 400 does not have the compression release that is on the 650.

Newer ever seen this bike in Sweden.
But there was a similar Yamaha SR 500.. it seems that this bike was 400 in moste other countries.. probably some regulations about newbies?

And there is not nomal to find any oil or others in the airbox.. on any bikes/cars!

My suggestion is that the pistone rings gone worned out, putting to much of the presure going to crankcase?

And after exhauste regulation come to be world wide, there is a pipe that ends in the airbox!

The most common cause of oil/gas in the airbox on a Savage is the stock vacuum petcock has a leaky diaphragm - and the fuel flowed down the vacuum tube and filled up the airbox.  And the fuel can also flow down the vent tube and go into the cylinder and fill up the crankcase with gasoline.....then when you start the bike the crankcase sends a lot of gasoline/oil mix out the vent tube.

I was presumaly thinking about oil!

But then it should be a small/bigger part of grease in the airbox.

But your sugestion is another cause of it, perticualy if its liquide ones.
