Squeaky whistling clutch?
04/15/21 at 03:53:41
I'm guessing the loud whistle I hear under load is clutch related (I'm a white collar goober newbie with my 1st bike in my 50s
Sometimes it's almost deafening. Is this normal? Any remedies? Using Rotella T6 oil based on recommendations on this site.

I'm gonna go with "no, not normal". I wonder if the basket is lose and making contact with the case. Can you post a video?

I have never heard a loud whistle from a clutch. Are you sure it's not a squealing drive belt?
I would say it sounds like whistle and it's usually worse under load. It's caused by the belt running hard against the side of the pulley. You might want to do a little adjusting to see if you can get it to go away.

Good call. I never even think drive belt...because I don't have one.

As ohiomoto has said The belt can make those noises
rear pulley wobble, misalignment ,incorrect tension can do that
rubbing beeswax on the edges helps also
After doing those things my belt is now silent

When exactly are you hearing the whistle?
I had a intermittent screech, turned out to be a bad bearing in the counter balancer.

Sprinkle foot powder, baby powder, on the belt, move the bike, do it again, ride.
Different?
Hopefully it's just the belt.
Then we explain how to adjust it

You guys really know how to make a newbie feel like an outsider
Does a real motorcyclist keep beeswax around?
My youngest kid is 18 and stopped shitting his pants at least two years ago
And I use spray on my feet
Apparently, I'm gonna have to buy a storage shed just to store all these essential supplies

Happens under load (like accelerating, but not only) with the clutch lever released. Squeezing the clutch lever in always stops it. Is that because the belt doesn't move when I've got the clutch lever squeezed?

If the bike is moving, the belt is moving. However, its shape or tension changes when under load. When loaded the top of the belt is tighter than the bottom. When you roll off the throttle - and especially when you pull in the clutch - the tension between top side and bottom side are almost equal.

You try adjusting the belt but I don't think it's the cause.
The belt is always moving when you're moving.
It can shift left or right depending on load though.
