02 Savage LS650 shut off while riding
03/30/21 at 07:21:45

Hello everyone!

So two weeks ago I purchased an 02 Savage LS 650 about 40 miles away from home. The bike rode perfectly for 35 miles! Then abruptly the engine just shut off on me. I was able to pull over and restart it and travel another half mile. This happened 4-5 times until I was able to reach a nearby friend's house. After a few days, I couldn't even get it to spur the engine, just the dreaded click-click-click sound, then nothing!

I was able to tow it to my house last week. The first thing I did to diagnose was attach jumpers and attempt to jump the bike. This stopped the clicking and the bike would kick but not turn over!

My gut says its the stator and/or regulator rectifier. I posted a link of a video of me trying to jump it. Can one of you kind brethren tell me if you think I should replace the stator and regulator rectifier?

Thank you!

Jay

Looks like a raptor petcock on there already but does it have fuel?
Have you tried it on reserve?

Well you killed the battery with multiple tries, recharge it.
But that's not the 1st problem unless it went dead while riding.

Your vid shows the battery isn't very strong, check it with a multimeter.
If when starting, the voltage drops below 10v, it's not going to start.
check the water, recharge or get a new battery.

Sounds like a classic petcock failure and the battery is weak.   You have compression, but you need fuel and a a strong spark to make fire.

When I was getting stuck and I turned it to reserve it was able to run a lot longer. I will add new fuel tomorrow and get that battery charged.

So you dont think this is a charging problem on the bike? Stator/ rectifier?

Several starts w/out running it long enough to charge... no.
but charging it full up should give you enough to run for an extended time.
Once you do get it started, after its warmed up, rev it up to 4000 rpm and it should show 14v.

It happendens to me altso last year, in my last autum ride.
Soo its becuse of this it was my last ride that year, in any way I did manage to get home!
At first the engine seems to be slugisch, nemas problemas, its often low gas, turned on reserv, stopped at nearest gas station, filled up and back to normal on the petcock!
In any case the engin started and I got home, even if it feldt like one is short of fuel!
To that.. Im alredy read a lot of the vacum petkock isue and thougt its about this?
Next wekend.. knowing about the vacum petkock isue, turned the petkock to overide the vacum and fill upp like no vacum need!
Than.. there was no current in my batteri, it was totaly broken!
Reading a lot in this forum, asking my biker friends and then I boght me a new AGM batterie.. mostly becuse my biker friends and some on this site says that AGM is often  better then ordanary wet bateries.
In  any case.. it was a menace to replace it, a lot of screws to be lose and side panels to.
On the other case, when the new batteri was in place, the engin started on standard petcock in its normal standing.
And to the petckock isue, I figure out there is several differant issues, no perticularu for our bike.
First, its a vacum petkock, there is a vacum tube frome the carburator to the petckock to make it open, this one can be old and leaking and it can be lose!
Any petkock have some filter to it, and if its full of dirt, it dont provide that much petrol anyhow.
Then try the reserv position, it sholdnt make it better, the same filter, but lower part on it! Shocked
In my case it was the battrey, that was broken.

So I took the battery to autozone, had them charge it up fully. I put it back in, put in some new fresh gas, and turned the key. The lights turned on, and I help the clutch gave some throttle and pressed the ignition button, I heard a few quick clicks and then the lights went out too! The lights were on when I was attempting to jump.

You probably need a new battery?

"but charging it full up should give you enough to run for an extended time."
Yeah, if the battery is not to old!

Every battery have a best befor time, wet ones, AGM and even Lithium!

In any case a new battery is one of the cheapest spareparts to buy.. and kind of easyest to replace.

The rules for jumping a bike are different than cars.
I don't know exactly how to do it safely.

When you jump start a motorcycle - never do it from a vehicle that is running.

Evidently there have been problems where the current or voltage from a running vehicle can fry the ignition module on the motorcycle.
