Ya, the check has come due, with compound interest, for abandoning Reconstruction and surrendering a portion of American culture to the ills of the Confederacy, the Klan, bigotry. We’ve gotten too used to hard won progress being the work of the past- we either push the weight of racist dogma up the hill, or let it crush our Republic. This isn’t a battle to destroy hate, but an opportunity to recognize it will always be with us and construct policies mindful of that persistent challenge.
