Custom Exhaust Advice Please
01/10/21 at 16:08:08

Hi Folks.
I've been lurking around here for a while and I finally picked up a 2016 Savage. It had a very slow parking lot drop and I got it for a bargain.
The intent is to build a bobber.
I found a custom longshot exhaust system off of a 1996 savage locally from a used parts seller.
The original oem exhaust on the 2016 had the rear plate of the muffler cut as shown in this photo. It is pretty loud.

OK. So I can not figure out how to add multiple photos today. I will continue my thread with a few additional replies of notes and photos. Sorry.

The longshot pipe is a bit louder and my question is can it be made a bit quieter. It has a baffle place in it about 3 inches in from the end as shown in these photos.

Now for the questions. The longshot extends 2 inches beyond the rear tire and I keep banging my shin on it. LOL. I think it will look better if I remove 6 inches from it.
Questions:
1) Do you think it looks better cut 6 inches shorter?
2) If I cut it and then re-install the baffle thus moving it 6 inches closer to the header pipe, will it change the sound? Louder, quieter, tone change or will it be virtually the same?
3)  Is there anything I can do to make it a bit quieter? Different baffle?
I know beans about exhaust systems so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Once I complete the project I will post some photos of the build. I'll figure out how to post multiple images hopefully!

Sometimes people change things and Call it a customized thing when nothing happened other than the owner, of his own misguided volition, vandalized his own bike.
You have an opportunity to set it right.
Don't worry about
Looks.
Repair the exhaust to GOOD FUNCTION.
Tons of information is available in this forum.

If you want to use the pipe you've got, cut it where it looks good to YOU. I'd probably trim it to where the end would be right about at the back edge of the rear wheel, even with the joint between the wheel and the tire bead. I'd also cut it at an angle with the long side of the angle at the top so the outlet more or less pointed down. But that's just the way I think it would look best.

Then wrap the baffle with fiberglass muffler packing more or less like in the video I've linked below, reinstall the baffle and see how you like the sound.

It's still going to be fairly loud I suspect but whether it's still too loud only you can decide.

The guy in the video is doing a dirt bike silencer, but the principle is the same.

As for baffles in drag type pipes there is a company Radiant Cycles that make and sell exhaust systems. They have catalytic baffles of various sizes to fit their exhaust systems, you can order them seperately. I have used one in the VooDoo slash cut on my '03'. They can be stacked up also. They are a little diffacult to install though due to bolt placement.

Measure the pipe inside diameter.
Hit the parts house.
Look for freeze plugs you can drill small holes in and drive in.

Room for three?
Three good holes in the first
How is it?

Need more?

Drill and install another..

Play with it
