Need help figuring out my carb
01/06/21 at 03:10:14
PLEASE HELP. I have an ls650 that I've installed new valves on. Engine runs, but the carb is acting weird. Alm the fuel over flow valves have been removed. My question is, what is the fifth nipple coming outbof my carb? Fuel in, vacuum line to pet thingy, and both overflows are almost accounted for. I have a fifth nipple on the right hand side of the carb that im unsure if it needs to be blocked off or what its purpose is. Ive been looking around for months and can't seem to find a similar carb. Does anyone know what this is for and if it needs to be blocked off. I have the raptor petcock mod so the vac line is properly blocked off.
The engine will idle but over quarter throttle starts spitting and after firing. Heats up extremely fast so most likely running lean. The nipple in question vents to just in front of the slide on the airbox side of the carb. Should this be linked to the airbox?
Any help and explanation would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to the forum. Can you provide us with a little more information? Can you confirm that your bike is using the OEM Mikuni BS40 carb? Was this bike originally sold in CA?

Hi, I cannot confirm its the stock carb. It is identical in everyday to all the carb tutorials ive seen in the forum apart from the nipple in question. I bought the bike in New Zealand and am unsure that it was sold in California, its most likely imported directly from Japan.

If it's the same as a California model, it's a vapor recovery port for the carbon canister.
It's just ported into the venturi somewhere and you can plug it.
won't affect the carb function.

Ok, so I should be plugging it then? If my floats are caved in slightly but not ruptured will that affect my fuel level?

Plug it off would be my suggestion and check your float height with a clear tube from the drain on the bottom of the bowl up the side of the carb open the drain and the level should be where the gasket is on the bowl with the bike level

If its volume has changed, it's not going to have the same level as stock so you need to play with the setting till it's right.
float level should just under the bowl gasket by the clear tube method.
