Made my first fender
09/12/20 at 10:19:59

Today is a happy day. I have had my English wheel ready for a few days.

And I was eager to use it.

So we took a sheet of 1.5mm thick aluminum and we started hitting it. Cheesy

2 hours later it almost looked like a mudguard.

And now finally weeeeeling....... Roll Eyes
And immediately I found out why it is called an English wheel. If you want to move to the right it goes to the left and vice versa. That really takes some getting used to. Tongue

But the result is worth it:

It's not perfect, but it follows the curves of the tire nicely. I think it is just a bit too wide. so I'll make a few more to see what looks best.

Thanks for watching.
And have a nice day  Smiley

@zevenenergie that's amazing work! Too bad you aren't nearby I'd love to borrow that wheel!

I recently decided learn how to fabricate my own fenders. I am using 16 gauge cold rolled steel. All my planishing and shaping is with hammers. I live in a residential neighborhood in Texas and because it's so loud, I close the garage door when hammering. So, I'm waiting for the winter months when the garage is not a sauna. My fenders are starting to take shape but have a long way to go to get planished out.

Nick from Catskill Mountain Customs has been very helpful. In case anyone is interested, here is his YouTube and Instagram.

YIKES! San Antonio? Boot camp was Hot,, and I was young then,, and had lived in Odessa,, Yeah,, closin the garage and swingin hammers,, hot,,

Ya know, a Harbor Freight panel cutter with a planishing hammer face in it can accomplish many minutes worth of hammering right quick,, A mount for it over a vise with the proper dolly in it and a foot controlled air valve, of course ya gotta have the air chisel valve open, do a lot right quick that way,, and ya dont hafta run it wide open,,
You can get a cheap set of tools, cut them off and weld whatever shape ya want on,
And having one of those tools around is handy in other places,, like driving a bushing or bearing out,, Ive smacked on stuff with a 4 pound hammer and a punch, never even budge,, spent 10 or 15 minutes wearing me out,, and put an appropriate shaped tool in the panel cutter and Braaap,, DONE,,
I have an old , treasured one I treat with more respect and a new HF one I treat like a rented mule,,

If you dont have a compressor,, You need one,, everyone needs a compressor,, because Tires,,
If ya get a small compressor, be aware of the Duty Cycle,, Youll kill it,,
When the compressor kicks in,, stop, let it catch up,, and dont add a biggo volume tank,,
No room? An air conditioner condensor pad outside, and a quick shed over it,,

I don't believe Harbor Freight sells one (at least not today). They do sell an English Wheel. But that's not going to fit in my work space or budget. I'll git'r done with the planishing tools (hammers and dollys) and nylon hammer (all from Harbor Freight). There is no rush, just waiting for the weather to cool off.
