Back in the summer of 96 my GF back then and I went tubing on the Delaware River up by Point Pleasant PA. We'd done it a hundred times and knew the river there well. Up on top of the rock is a young black couple with an infant waving for help. As I get closer I can see the wreckage of a canoe from the rental place stuck in the pools downstream of rocks.

I signal to my GF to head over to the island side. It's hard work but we managed to beach on the island right near the big rock with the stranded couple.

This is the time before cellphones. Nobody lives along this stretch of river. And the rental place warns people away from this side of the river. If I don't do something the people will be trapped there a very long time and the woman and baby are both crying hysterically.
Having been a licensed lifeguard I decided I could help them.

So I grab my tube and start crossing the river. It's only waist deep but the current is so strong that twice I get my legs pulled out from under me and sucked under. Each time I then had to fight upstream to get to the big rock. Eventually I make it there with a nice gash in my leg for my efforts. I calm the people down and explain I'm a lifeguard. They agree to let me help them and tell me they don't know how to swim.
I set the tube in the null pool downstream of the rock. Then me and the dude carry the woman and child down from the rock and into the tube. Next is the hard part. I instruct dude to hang onto his side of the tube and let his body drag like an anchor while I do the same from the other side. The goal is to slow the tube and keep it under control enough to steer to the shore downstream where there's a mud bank. It's only about 500 feet. So after encouraging dude we kick off the rock. We're both getting slammed into rocks and having a rough time but in less than 2 minutes I mange to get the tube and its passengers directed into calmer waters and moving to the shore.

Along the way dude yells about losing a sneaker.

But we get to the shore and get the woman and baby out of the tube and she's clearly relieved to be back on land again.

But dude isn't glad. Instead he's throwing a fit about his brand new hunerd-n-fiddy dolla sneakers. I tell them to walk down the bank a half mile and they'll be back to the rental place where they started out. The woman starts walking. But dude is now getting belligerent at me over his sneakers. He's saying it's my fault he lost one. This escalates into stupidity and then he's yelling crap like "watcha gonna do about my new sneakers you white muthafukka?" Bla bla yada ad nauseam. I'm too exhausted from fighting the river and black and blue all over with a gashed leg. I'm in no shape for a fistfight with the jackass so I get in my tube and float away. Dudes following me on the bank shouting about fukking me up and killing me and cracka, honky, racist apoplexy etc. Etc. Etc.

I think to myself the next time I see black people stuck up on that rock I'm probably better off giving them the finger as I float past.

My GF says what an ungrateful dickhead, we just saved his baby and babymama and all he cares about is stupid sneakers and that you should buy him new ones.

Funny thing was I passed his sneaker further down the river where the current slowed. And it was a cheap knock-off of air jordans you can buy from a guy on the sidewalk in the city for $25.
If the guy hadn't acted like such a jackass I might grabbed it and paddled to the side and left it for him.
I just let it alone. I wonder if it eventually made it all the way to the Atlantic?
