If you have to turn the screw out more than 3 turns, you need a larger pilot jet.

Most bikes run fine with a #50 or #52.5.  Running a #55 is likely too rich on any Savage.

Here is a link that describes which jets fit.  You want the jets for the CV carb in the second part......the first part if for the VM carb.
