fuel tank debris

when I was checking my gas level today, I noticed what at first I thought was grass in my fuel tank, but now I am starting to think it is metal shavings.  Any idea how they could get into my tank? I did replace the stock petcock with the raptor, but that was months ago. and how do I get them out?

Have you ever filled the tank from a gas can (especially an old metal can)  instead of a gas station pump?

Turn the petcock to OFF. Take the tank off the bike and pour the contents into a clean container. A white plastic bucket would be my choice. Then look in the bucket and see what you've got. Grass will float I think. If the shavings are steel a magnet should pick them up out of the bucket.
