Bike will not Idle
07/01/20 at 03:39:16

I bought this in Sept. 2019 9000 miles and has a Raptor petcock......
Savage LS650 with a Mikunibs40 Carb....put about 300 miles on last oct. filled the Gas and stabil.. put away till this May...Had riden about 40 miles this year when I was coming to a stop or downshift to lower rpms.. wanted to die. I took it out 2 weeks ago and ended up pushing it home about 2 miles...just died and I cranked it dead trying to start again. Since then I have changed the gas, did a SeaFoam soak in the carb for 24 hrs. cleared all the vacuum leads, and changed the fuel line. and set the idle mix screw to recommended . Now when I start it.. it runs very strong till it warms and the idle drops. If I do not touch the throttle it will run strong for about 10 mins, stumble and die. If I throttle up during this time it will immediately stumble and die. ... it is a 1995.

What is the condition of the spark plug and air filter? What jets are installed? What is the condition of the vacuum diaphragm for the slide? What is the condition of the slide?

A few things can cause the warm running issues you are having (such as valve clearance and the coil), but before I start making suggestions, you need to run down the easy things.

New spark plug gapped at .32..I am having the carb rebuilt this week. as I would not know a problem with it if I was looking at it. I am hoping this will take care of the issue. If not I will be back here asking for other suggestions. Thank you for your response.

Hopefully your carb will be returned to you fully functional, but if not consider......
If fuel is flowing to the carb from the tank properly, and the plug is good and you have spark, then the problem is likely still inside the carb.
Completely disassemble, remove/clean/check every jet, clean/check every passageway for air/fuel flow with air/carb cleaner/carb cleaning tool.
This will solve the issue or show you what part may be causing it.

It does take some time to do (pretty easy for an afternoon) but it can save you lots of frustration and additional down time.
It can teach you a lot about the carb in the process as well.

engine and Carb garage close to home, specializes in Harley work , but the Mechanic/ Owner was very interested in helping & confident he could fix the problem. If yo would like the name i can give it, wasn't sure it would be cool to do so without asking

Try Ron Ayers or Bike Bandit. One of them should have an OEM float.

Could the mechanic repair the old float?

Our floats are plastic and can’t be braised.

Ok ..I finally got the carb back from the shop. seems there were quite few things going on with it, Jets F-dup, and the float was shot. now I need a procedure recommendation on installing it  ie; air box boot on the box , or put it on after the carb is on?....suggestions??

There's no magic to getting it on. Personally I find it easier to install without the tank in place. I also find it easier to install rotated 90 degrees from center. Other than that, don't be afraid to man-handle it into place. The boots are rubber and can be moved where they have to go.
