Straight pipe + rear brake = bad news??

I noticed my exhaust shoots right onto my rear brake and part of the brake line... Is this heat enough to damage anything?

I was thinking about just taking a hacksaw and cutting the muffler down a little. Are there any drawbacks to doing this? (I'm a novice mechanic xD )

Also, I saw some aftermarket turnout muffler attachments.
What's your experience with these and would you recommend them?

Reply #1 - 05/25/20 at 18:32:49 The muffler is steel ,if it doesn't melt ,the brake cable and arm won't either. however it may get covered by soot , but I don't think cutting it shorter will change that ,or affect the noise level , or it's bad performance.

A turnout piece will divert the exhaust away from the rear and are relatively cheap. It works.
Or you can get a short piece of pipe, bent 10-15 degrees, and install between the header and muffler and move the muffler to a better position.
Or build a new exhaust system with your desired header/muffler combo. That’s always fun. 😎🏍

This is one reason I like turnout's on the savage. BTW On a GS500 a poorly aimed muffler like the cobra F1 used to be, will splatter your rear right turnsignal with soot, and if you have a backfire it will melt it. Don't ask how I know.

Less then 2 weeks ago there was a whole discussion on the concept of aftermarket turn-outs and loud pipes. In the end it all involves a lot of fabrication and compromise to make it work.

When it comes to what you can buy for our rides there are limited choices and when you look, some sketchy install when experimenting with unusual things. Like the post featuring a muffler bolted to the swingarm from a couple weeks ago.

The angles of the alignment of the header and the mounting bracket on frame make it a challenge to put any thing else in there and have it look good. A solid, shock mounted attachment is the issue of importance if you don't want it falling off as you go down the road. My buddy who has been building bikes for 30 plus years and rides them on trips of hundreds and thousands of miles made sure to emphasis that to me when I discussed my exhaust build ideas with him.

What works around town isn't necessarily good build engineering and safe riding.

Reply #12 - 05/27/20 at 09:40:33 It was pretty close 2-3" maybe, and this may have been a flame out+explosion exploding right in front of it, spraying fuel onto the T/S followed by another explosion where it caught fire.
