Swingarm swap GS550L
05/23/20 at 14:28:17

Ive been reading up on how others have setup monoshocks on the savage and the biggest constant is that our swingarm is simply not up to the task without heavy reinforcement. Someone mentioned using parts from a GS550 and the 83 550L happens to have a monoshock. Has any one used any pieces from the 550 or know of an attempt successful or not of a swingarm swap?

Every now and then, during the 15 years Ive been here,, some intrepid soul will take a step into unknown territory..
Armen took an unprecedented step into the chain tensioner ideas, Before that, a fella decided he could put a chain on it,, and he researched sprockets and came up with a combination that othere use still,, maybe youre the guy who comes up with a really workable rear suspension

If you go trying to weld a single shock mount on your bike please get a better welder and get more practice.  That thing will be under some heavy stress.

Does anyone have the stock swingarm measurements written down or have a stocker laying around they could get some numbers for me?

Zsteele ,  both the frame and the swingarm have tolerances  there are probably no two exactly alike that's why on some bike the head can be removed in the frame, and a 150/90/15 tire will fit between the cross member of the swingarm , yet the marks on swing arm can't be used to align the drive belt . You may be better off using your own swingarm for measurement .

I guess you may have to rely on yourself for the baselines.

I am very much in the preliminary stages of this project. I have the gs550l swingarm and linkages, work and trying to buy a house pretty much eats any build time. I most likely will pick up another stocker, just poking the forums to see if any one has one around.

Sounds like youve got a busy life,, and if you can lamd a Savage, running,, you can work of the mods on th frame AND do stuff to the motor,, TRy to get one that works with your wiring harness,,

Idk why everyone assumes the wiring harness is a problem? The m.unit works great and is a breeze to install. Combined with the motoscope mini speedo the bike ran just fine before the engine mods. Just need to find some time to work out the kinks and get the carb sorted.
