Key ignition "fix"?
04/30/20 at 13:53:53

I was getting new tires put on yesterday. The mechanic accidentally left the key in the position all the way up which is the Park lights. So when he handed it back to me the battery needed a quick charge. Is there a way to eliminate that position on the key? Like maybe a wire to clip on there? I don't really see the need for that anyhow. Thanks!

EDIT: I am looking to eliminate all power draw in the key's "park" position, not eliminate the parking light.

Yes, many have succumbed to this trap.

I don't know where it's required to have the rear lamp on when parked.
But leaving it on for a number of hours always results in a dead battery.

I don't remember if it's the tail running light or the license plate light.
Just snipping it could get you a ticket.
I would change it to an low power LED and call it good.

Every light on my bike is low voltage LED.  You are confusing my question though. I do NOT want to eliminate the light, that light is on when the key is in the "on" position which is good....  I am looking to simply eliminate the 3rd key position where the parking light is just on by itself for pretty much no reason.

Naw, you are confusing my answer.  I know there's no reason locally for it, I hate to go to some poodunk town and have sgt. pusser work me over for some freaken light.

But the light still works and is on when the bike is on. I'm not trying to clip the wire for the light. I'm just trying to stop the bike from have the electric on on when the key is in the 3rd position. Of all the bikes I have had, none have had this. And the search inside on here it seems a handful of people swapped the ignition out for a 2 position one.  There is nothing requiring that 3rd position since the parking lights will come on in the "on" position.

you'd have to clip the brown wire off the back of the ig switch and resolder it to one of the main wires.

I don't know if you'd have to disassemble the switch to do it.

It may seem a good idea to cut the wires and just use the switch, but if the switch is in the on position for any length of time you could have much bigger problems than a dead battery.  I would much rather suffer that than a toasted ignition TDI.
There was no need for you to leave your key in the bike to begin with , not to change tires , shame on you!

You need to read buddy. I don't leave my key in the bike. I never have. If you read my original post you would see that I said the mechanic left my key in the bike. So I guess shame on you for not reading.  I pull the key when I am done. I don't leave my key in the on position unless I am riding the bike.  Fun fact though, you can pull the key out when it is in the "park" position and well then you can kill your battery, where if I did what I am asking here how to eliminate the power draw in the "park" position there would be no issue...with anything.

Make a guard the doesn’t allow rotation beyond the off position.

Good idea, has anyone done anything like this?

My reading skills seem to be fine , yours may need a little work. "the mechanic left my key in the bike"  doesn't chime with I NEVER leave my key in the bike. It seems apparently you do.
None the less ,I 'll toss you a bone ,cause I'm a nice guy  Roll Eyes
there are Four wires that run between the key switch and the connector , there 's a red, and orange, and two others that may vary depending on year. cut the two others  and wire them together so they return through the connector and your done.  except for taping off the two leads on the back of the key switch that should not be joined.

My mechanic came up with this crazy new concept where I give him the key while he works on my bike. Don't try and be clever after you look like an idiot. Clown.

Perhaps you might learn how to work on the bike yourself ,you may learn how to read a an electrical diagram and see how to bypass the key switch as I've shown in the above post.

If it were me I'd go in and modify the switch. Not too difficult. I have thought about doing it but am too lazy. Smiley
