Not an issue with dumb phones, but it you use that phone for accessing bank accounts etc. the verification process is worth money.

They then use that to have something like a two-step authentication sent to the phone they have, that now has your number, and gain access to your bank account.

I am not aware of a lot of land-line scams used by verification alone, they have to get you talking. I'd google "port-out scam" if you want to read up on it more. CNET usually has brief articles.

I think from a scammer standpoint knowing the number is "real" or activated is the only reason they need to make a live call, so hanging up only helps if they intend to talk you into a scam.

Knowing what verbal scams are out there helps, for instance I just got one last week telling me that my power would be cut off "tonight" if I didn't address an outstanding balance of $988.77. Of course they needed me to go to an "Authorized Payment" location which was a Walgreens where I could purchase pre-paid Visas. Obvious scam, but put together well. They had to transfer me from customer service to accounting etc. For the most part it sounded similar to any customer service experience I have had before.

Most important with a smart phone is not clicking on text-links you do not know. "Important account update" texts etc. Just know your bank and who to call.

Pick a fake birthday and use that when you are asked for your birthday. Only use your real one when you have to. And always opt out of SS# . Seems like there should only a few government agencies that require SS# and they should be related to Social Security and the IRS.
