How do you stop the tensioner from extending fully when the sprocket in the head is removed? I'm guessing that the side cover must be removed as well and the tensioner locked down. This looks like one for dragbikemike.

It's pretty tight even after removing tensioner, and rear guide.

I am not finished with my cam chain replacement but I get the feeling that it's much easier to to work on the cam shaft if you remove the clutch cover, the entire clutch and the cam chain sprocket. I am certain someone else will think I'm crazy and advice you not to do this, but these are my findings so far being a complete novice at this.

First you need to remove the clutch plate. It's held down with 4 screws with a 10mm metric hex head.

Once you have removed the plate and the springs you can reach the 32mm nut that is locked with a washer that is bent up against one side if the nut. I was not comfortable with bending that washer down with force but I guess that's way it is done.

Using an impact wrench it is quite easy to remove the 32mm nut that holds down the entire clutch.

You don't have to separate the parts the way I did in the clip. I realized this afterwards.

I highly recommend loosening the left hand threaded 30mm nut that holds down the gear covering the cam chain sprocket BEFORE you remove the clutch. If you do that I think you don't have to lock the gears with a copper washer or piece of brass the way I did

I tried using a solid copper wire first to lock the gears. Don't do that. That was kinda dumb and I got a small piece of copper that I had to remove with a forceps before I could get a piece of brass locked between the gears instead. The impact wrench worked great but keep i mind that the nut is left hand threaded - righty loosy, leftie tightie. Double and triple check before you use an impact wrench so you don't end up damaging the threads

I've never pulled a clutch basket on a savage - and I have pulled a couple CCT's - but I also have been told I can get into super tight spaces I have no business being in. I'd take 4 racked carbs and split em, and not need to synch them after.
