Oil Choice

I read some people strongly recommending Shell Rotella T6 Synthetic 5W-40.  What makes this oil a lot of people's go to?

1. Inexpensive
2. Easy to find
3. Has all the stuff our engines need (ZDDP)
4. Doesn't have the stuff that slips our clutch (friction modifiers).  JASO  MA/MA2 spec.
5. works fine, last a long time.
6. 200,000 miles (almost) on one of my bikes.

Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut between the seat and the handlebars. Make sure yours isn't too tight or too loose.

I'm probably wrong but I thought Moly was something the savage engine did not like.

Woops.  Your are correct.  It is the ZDDP that we need.  Edited my post.  THanks!  Cheesy

I use the Rotella T6 in all my bikes and cars. We sold our VW Jetta with 272,000 miles, Honda Civic wagon with 260,000 miles, Honda Civic coupe with 180,000 miles and they all ran fine when sold and they did not need any engine repairs or burn any oil. My current Pontiac Vibe has 167,000 miles and I hope to get another 100,000 miles from it.  My bikes have relatively low miles in comparison- but I do expect no oil related engine wear in them.

There really isn’t any need to buy more expensive oil - the Rotella does everything well.

I've been using Rotella in all of my bikes since 2000-ish. What I find interesting...I belong to many motorcycle model specific forums for the various bikes I own (and have owned) and without exception, everyone advocates that Shell Rotella is the best motorcycle oil value. So this recommendation is not unique to this Savage forum.

Funny, I noticed while reading the reviews to the T6 oil on Amazon that everyone was stating that it is great for their bikes.  I put it in last week, I was just curious to why everyone loves it so much.  Glad to hear people like it that much and it does its job!

Valvoline also has a diesel oil with similar levels of ZDDP as Rotella, same size and price.  Got it at Walmart.

You can also buy just ZDDP and then measure/add to oil during replacement according to what you want.

I did that for a while.....pain in the butt!

The Savage uses so little oil and only 1/2 oz of additive with each oil change - the bottle of the Redline ZDDP would get a pink layer of goo on the bottom of the bottle a couple months after it was opened.  Once that was on the bottom of the bottle - I am not sure the ZDDP was in solution any longer.

It is far easier and cheaper just to buy the right oil.

Ditto. As a result of this forum, I use it in all of my bikes, 4 wheeler, mowers, etc. for the last 7 years. Never an issue.
