Simple Engine Stand

I have a bad habit of putting things off.  Every time I work on my engines I end up trying to support them with just about anything I can find laying around the garage.  I’m sure many of you have found yourself struggling with a mess like this.  It usually starts tipping over just about the time you are trying to get the cylinder past the top ring.

I’ve got lots of free time right now, so I decided to make a simple tool to properly support my engine.  Now I can work without fear of dropping the whole shebang right off the workbench.  It’s just a couple of 2” x 2” x 11” boards screwed & glued to a couple of 1” x 2” x 7-3/4” boards.  Very simple.  You now have all the dimensions you need to make a similar cradle that will fit like a glove.  Make one before you pull your engine.  You won’t regret it.

To completely stabilize the engine while it’s resting in the cradle, use a few wooden door-frame wedges.  Adjust the wedges so that the engine rests solid & level in the cradle.    Once the wedges are just the right fit, cut them off and glue them to the cradle.

This should give you an idea how the wedges work.

Now you can work on your engine without worrying if it will stay upright.

Now if you really want a Cadillac engine stand, see Armen.  He’s got the hot ticket.

I am in the middle of getting my own stand so I can start replacing the cam chain. I got some pieces of L-shaped that a friend will help me weld and another friend is making the spacers. I will try and mount everything using the two lowest frame mount holes and original 180mm bolt.

He's not quite finished with it.
He's gotta drill a half a million holes in it now.

That looks like a nice setup Kamelryttarn.  I bet a set of casters would be nice.   The angles lend themselves to mounting casters and it would make the engine easy to move around in the shop.
