Communist China has allowed wild animal markets to offer live bats, raccoons, civets and other species, and a series of studies shows the animals are teeming with viruses that threaten humans.

I would add, they have put the people on slave wages so they cant live otherwise.

She had never seen bats, and rats and other things like that in the market. So I think these are the result of Mao starving people, They ate what they could find, sadly after all these years it stayed on their plate.
