i just read some info about the drive belt and have another question. does the drive belt howel when riding? it sounds as if its coming from the rear wheel area and stops on deceleration

You didn't say if the bike is used , the belt making noise can be either misalignment of the belt/rear wheel (don't go by the marks on each side of the axle ,they may not be correct) or from the bearing in the rear pulley being worn ( jack the rear of the bike ,grab the pulley at 3&9 O'clock a see if there's play when you try to shake it ) . It could also be adjusted to tight ,proper adjustment will allow you to twist the belt in the bottom center 90 degrees using your thumb and one finger.

thank you so much for your reply. my bike is a 2012 with 8000 miles.i have adjusted the belt with the brass guide that is in the tool kit. the belt appears to be running in the center of the pulley ie a little space on either side. if it is not a hazard or would be lessening belt life, it doesn't bother me. i've put about 3000 miles my savage since i bought it. thanks for reading, roddy

Yep, the belt can make noise. And if it gets wet it is even worse.

That's to bad, because if you used the supplied gauge there is a good chance the belt could be to tight and prone to snap and brake prematurely , But that's OK their only $218.00,maybe more , if it
ruins the rear pulley bearing or the output shaft bearing inside the center cases.

Yup, what the Batman said,...
The belt tightens when the shocks compress,... I keep mine a little loose.
90 degree twist method beats the factory gauge.

Yep, I agree with Serowbot. I keep it a bit on the loose side also.
