Left turns on Obama for challenging calls to ‘tear down the system’
By Ronn Blitzer

Obama issues a warning about the liberal policies being proposed by some 2020 Democrats
Voters have to be 'rooted in reality' says former President Barack Obama.

Former President Barack Obama is facing a new wave of criticism from the Democratic Party's left flank after cautioning Democrats about going too radical with their policy proposals — in the latest sign of a growing rift between the popular 44th president and the party's activist base.

Obama on Friday warned 2020 Democratic presidential hopefuls to pay attention to what voters actually think, claiming at a gathering of Democratic donors that most of them don’t want to “tear down the system” and that many Democrats “just don’t want to see crazy stuff.” Members of his party soon turned on him, using the hashtag #TooFarLeft.

“I’m #TooFarLeft because I want kids to be safe in school.
I’m #TooFarLeft because I want people to live in dignity.
I’m #TooFarLeft because I seek justice and equality.
I’m #TooFarLeft because I think healthcare and housing are human rights,” tweeted former Hillary Clinton adviser Peter Daou, who started the hashtag.

Daou clarified Sunday evening that the slogan "isn't primarily about Obama for me, though he was the catalyst for the tag."

It quickly went viral, used by other liberal Democrats such as Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar.

If being #TooFarLeft means believing:
✅ Healthcare is a human right
✅ Future generations should live on a healthy planet
✅ All student debt should be cancelled
✅ The minimum wage should be $15
✅ Lives depend on gun reform
✅ Families don’t belong in cages

Celebrities weighed in as well. Former “Two and a Half Men” star Jon Cryer claimed a "far left" position is necessary to counter an existential threat to humanity.

“I am #TooFarLeft because I believe that we cannot let greed cause the collapse of the ecosystem that supports all human life on earth,” he tweeted.

This is not the first time Obama has taken a stance against the leftward drift of the party or been on the receiving end of criticism for allegedly being too moderate.

During a discussion at the Obama Foundation Summit held at the Illinois Institute of Technology in October, Obama explained that the world is more complicated than people realize and urged politically active Americans to be practical if they want to be effective.

“This idea of purity and you're never compromised and you're always politically woke, and all that stuff, you should get over that quickly," Obama said.

Several Democratic presidential candidates have taken veiled shots at Obama’s administration this year while targeting his former vice president, Joe Biden — especially regarding health care and immigration.

Over the summer, before he dropped out of the race, New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio said Biden should “absolutely” answer for the Obama administration’s deportation record.

Maybe he should run as a moderate?  Grin

One Clinton advisor does not constitute "the Left".   Nor do a dozen such voices that may take issue with the former President's speech.   Politics is a spectrum, as are the left and right sides of the aisle in Congress.   That digital distinction- left and right -is artificial, defies our individual values, and does us all a disservice.

Without doubt there is a political calculation to be made.   There was a time when advocating women's suffrage would have assured political defeat.  Exactly where we citizens are collectively in our progress toward a more perfect expression of the American egalitarian ideal may not be precisely judged.   Though it would be a mistake to discount Obama's pragmatism, it would likewise be foolhardy to take differences in estimation as some profound division among significant portion of the Democrat Party.   The Party is far more centrist than the radical image painted by detractors; the Nation as a whole hasn't swung to the Left so much as it has continued a progressive arc.

The GOP's calcified position continues to tear away supporters as the Nation moves onward, a remarkable number of incumbent Republicans electing to not seek re-election.   Meanwhile, the Democratic caucus now reflects the citizenry more closely than any previous cohort from any party, ever.   While the Democrats may be experiencing a transformation, it is along the lines of an opening blossom- where as the Republican Party has entered a chrysalis.   It is unclear which portions will emerge, butterfly-like, to transform with the times, and which will be relegated to the past; the Tea Party has already waned, suffering from the limited appeal of a regressive message and the death of a primary financial backer.   We have to hope and encourage that growth, as there really is no Left and Right- only us... something made starkly clear as we gather around the Thanksgiving Day table in a few days, me thinks.
