Won't Idle issue/problem (Read 110 times)

Won't Idle issue/problem

I started up my bike last week and let it get warm. Started down my road and about 50meters out it stalled. Tried to start it again and no go. Pushed it back home. After a short inspection I noticed gas in the oil so changed the oil and took the carb off and sprayed it kinda. Same thing. Started up beautify then after a while it dies. Maybe I didn't clean it good enough. After 11k miles on the bike maybe i'll do a carb rebuild kit. That's what I did tonight. Cleaned it real good and got everything back together and it did it again. Started fine, then died. Dies when giving it throttle. Then eventually won't start.

A few things about the bike:
raptor style petcock
re-jetted carbs with kit i bought here
plenty of gas
new-ish sparkplug read a little rich
charged battery
valve adjustment a few months ago
new air filter and cleaned

It ran soooo well before last week.

Also, took the muffler off the night before my issues but i wasn't home and had to ride the bike home after i put the muffler back on and it ran fine. I'm thinking there might be an air leak but i tightened the muffler clamp good so i don't know what it could be. The muffler is a Harley I don't remember maybe a sportster but it sounded like a rusty didgeridoo.

Also Also, I tend to forget to turn the gas off and maybe that was the gas in oil issue??

I need some guidance now please.

Raptor "style" petcock?
 Did you remove the float? you need to look at the valve tip , if you see a ring groove on it  it's worn and needs replacement  (there's a fine screen under the float valve seat which could need cleaning )and the O-ring that seals the outside of the seat to the carb body , and you need to check the floats for leakage and the float valve level needs to be checked last.
     Gas in your oil is a sure sign that one of the above is the cause , you should have waited until you found it before changing your oil , you may have to change it again.

What batman said.  Float needle is not closing.  Clean or replace asap.

The kit came with the float needle.

I'll check the float level and try that with the bike more upright.

The float needle and seat are a matched set.  both need to be changed if needed . All you need to do is remove the horseshoe clip held by the screw to pull the valve seat straight out the only resistance will be from the O-ring that seals it against the carb body. inspect the O-ring for damage / age,  (fuel moving past it will also flood the carb) clean the filter (it comes off) as any dirt caught in it may block the valve from closing fully even if the valve is good.

Be sure to check the jet sizes that came with the kit against the jets you removed, many kits come with the wrong sizes (generally to small) and could be why the bike dies when you open the throttle (it goes to lean to run).

"The kit" has me worried, carb kits are year and local specific, usually not the year/local that you have.

While it's nice to have all clean jets, I don't recommend it.
It doesn't matter as much with a single carb, but it's said that OEM jets are more precise than after market.
So it's recommended to clean them rather than replace them.

Idling needs to be upright because of oil delivery to the high side of the cam starving. Idle speed needs to be , IIRC, 1150ish.

Yes  the new float needle and seat will be fine ,you just don't want to use an old needle with a new seat or vise versa. Suzuki lists them as a -float valve assembly,  for that reason.
     be sure to check the jet sizes ,we've seen the wrong jets in kits many, many times.

Update: (that no one needed)

I took the carb apart, cleaned the jets again, put back all original jets, used new float needle and seat. Then measured the float height and it was off about -.3" so I readjusted it in spec. Started it up and it ran like a champ! I did notice there was some air coming out of the exhaust from what looked like a ding where the down-pipe is welded. Maybe I'll weld that little spot and see if that helps. Otherwise, I'm satisfied with how it's running. Like normal. It was about 28 degrees yesterday so I only road it down to the gas station and back.
