Softer Rear Shocks
10/25/19 at 18:25:26

Hi All. In a few of the threads I’ve read about rear shocks, I didn’t see any definitive answers on a softer ride. The stock shocks on my ‘87 are causing quite a bit of discomfort for me on decent bumps (yes, they are adjusted all the way out to the softest setting). Are the vs800 shocks softer? Any other suggestions for shocks under $100?

Progressive shocks only run about $150.00 new, and they have at least 3 spring rates you can order . The only other cost is a bushing kit ,about $10.00 needed to size them to your mounts ,seeing as these are made to fit many different brands of bikes. Just remember that the spring rate is for EACH shock.

Yes the intruder shocks are softer, but without the extra travel, you're going to bottom out.
I'm about 240.
Sew has them too, he's about 140.

The stock shocks are about 10.5, intruders are about 11.5 long.

Batman, I’m trying to avoid spending too much. Maybe if I end up putting a lot of miles on her, I’ll consider it. My daily ride is a 2015 Yamaha Super Tenere and I only plan on using my savage for short joy rides.
That said, I’m about 200 lbs and am not used to so stiff a suspension. At least now I know there’s no way in hell I’ll get a hardtail. Unless the seat gets a pneumatic suspension. 🙄
Do the vs800 shocks match the Savage or will I need to change the bushings?
