Clean melted boot rubber from chrome exhaust?
10/08/19 at 21:55:05
Hello All: I tried a forum search before posting this question. Didn't find anything.
Owned my bike about a month (2017 Boulevard S40).
I've found that my right boot sole has melted slight black residue onto my exhaust when I ride. Obviously my boot has contacted the hot exhaust pipe when I rest it on the right foot peg when I ride. It's not real thick. Just annoying to look at.
Any advice to clean it off? Obviously I don't want to scuff up my chrome. I've tried bug and tar remover (label specifies safe for chrome) but barely effective so far.
I've heard the following recommended:
Acetone
Lacquer thinner
Easy Off oven cleaner
Any advice?
Thanks!

Brand new single edge razor. Hold it a low angle and shave the stuff off. Don't flip the razor over as the edge will have deformed and will scratch if flipped over.
Then Happich Semi-Chrome polish.

Easy-off worked great for me when my rain pants melted on the header.
Spray on coarse terry cloth towel when the header is warm. Not hot and not cold. Hold it there a bit and then use the cloth to scrub off any residue.
Don't spray directly on the bike as it won't be good for paint etc.

Brass doesn't harm chrome.

Congratulations on finding a easy method of making the header black.
All it takes is an old shoe.
Hope it works well for you.

Thank you Armen. I might try that. Most of it is very thin and appears to have come off. There's a slightly thicker/more stubborn patch I might try that with.

Thanks Tocsik. Good point about the towel. I'll probably try this next. Most of it's pretty thin now. I ran the engine just long enough to make it warm but not hot.

Yeah. Luckily it's not too bad. Trying to be mindful to watch out for that.

Hello All: Thanks for your feedback. Result is that Easy Off on a warm pipe (ran engine until pipe became warm to the touch) did the trick. No harm to chrome. There's a tiny but stubborn deposit left near the exhaust shield proximal to the right foot peg. Likely I'll need to apply a material removal technique (like a razor blade) to detach that and the chrome will need a little local polish touch up (Blue Job perhaps. Or I've got some generic chrome cleaner.)
And I need better boots. Rode in the rain last week, took 2 days to dry out my boots. LOL! But apparently my foot technique has gotten better. No additional residue on the pipe.
Thanks again!

I've never had much luck removing burnt-on stuff on chrome pipes/mufflers. At best, I get the stuff off and there is a large dull spot that cannot be shined to match the existing chrome. But I guess a dull spot on the chrome is better than a large black spot.
