I have a couple of suzuki savages. I keep one box stock for comparison and do my mods to the second. About 15,00 miles ago I replaced the stock seat with one from a sportster. It required removing the snorkel. About 5,000 miles ago I installed Daves larger front sprocket. The loss of mid range grunt made the bike not much fun around town. I live at 6,000 ft elevation, but the drop in power seemed more than it should have been. Well, about a month ago I decided to reinstall the original seat. AND I put the snorkel back on. SHAZAM, all that mid range power returned! So yeah, I guess the factory put a snorkel on the air box for a good reason!

Yes, removing the snorkel will lean out the mixture.
You should've rejetted to make it right.

That was my question, did you revise the jetting at any time? Not an apples-to-apples comparison otherwise.

Both bikes had the needle raised. the one with the taller gearing had a pilot jet one step up. But I think the stock set up at this altitude was just fine. The "stock" bike never needs the choke to get going. The "modded" savage almost always needs the choke when cold. Go figure.

The needle has no effect on the cold circuit.

Yeah Gary, I understand how a cv carb works. The point I was trying to make is that these two bikes were set up the same (excluding the larger pilot jet on the modded bike. And for some reason when I reinstalled the snorkel my mid range was way better. Why did I not have a puny mid range with no snorkel and stock gearing? All I know is that with taller gearing and no snorkel it did not run well. Tall gearing with the snorkel installed, it runs great. Could it be that when I had no snorkel with the stock gearing it was running poorly but I could not tell the difference? Seems unlikely. My take away from this conundrum is that the factory knows a lot more than I ever will.

The snorkel is part of " intake tuning ", the distance between the intake valve and the air box opening, matters. By adjusting the length of your intake channel ,it's possible to add boosts of 4, 7 , and 10% more air fuel mix into the cylinder at certain ranges of rpm. removing the stock snorkel will reduce performance at any throttle opening except WOT.
