40 hp/40lbs torque  verse 50/50
09/28/19 at 02:50:58

Just pickup a 1997 Savage for a winter project  its in fair shape for the age mileage about 18k

I have been reading the post on cam, piston, porting and chain conversion -
So here's my question what does it really take to bring thumper from stock 31/37 to 40/40(ish) verse 50/50(ish) hp/torqu?

Yes I would like to pull a ton, Smiley and be able to have good cushion of power for pulling away from RVA I64 and I95 traffic that seems to roll 75-80 mph

What is the performance sweat spot for this little thumper? And what does it really take to get there
?

What is the performance sweat spot for this little thumper?

It's sweating at around 55. And out of air and at near exhaustion at 70.

No not a Raptor 660 petcock  (unless you need one),  But it is time to check the cam chain tensioner,  front dive pulley nut torque , valve clearance ,  all things that could ruin the motor.

I have a modified engine (Wiseco 95mm piston, Stage 3 cam, porting, exhaust, Mikuni carb, double Kawasaki pulleys, 18" rear wheel), and I have had it up to 100.1 mph twice........it really doesn't want to go any faster than that.  It gets up to 80 mph pretty quickly - beyond that the acceleration slows down considerably.

I think 50HP is a bit optimistic......40 is likely doable.  Even a modified engine Savage is not really all that good at 80 mph cruising......but they are a lot of fun in the 60-70 mph range.

I don't want to "cruise" at 90 mph, I am happy 65 mph  (ish), that said it  is a numbers game..

LS650  ~390 lb bike plus 215  lbs of rider so  let call it 600 pounds.
Stock power (31/37),works out 19 pounds per HP and  16 pounds per foot pound of  torque.

Stock Sportster 883  489lbs +210lbs=~700
stock power ~(45/53)   works out to 15 pounds per hp and 13 pounds per foot of torque ...

So to match the 883 numbers the Savage would need 40 horse power and 46 ft lbs of torque.

Just to cover the bases
Stock Sportster 1200 , 530lbs bike +210 lbs rider=~740lbs
Stock Power (59/67) 12 lbs per horse power and 11 lbs per foot of torque

To match 1200  the Savage would need 50 hp and  55 foot lbs of torque.

Just something to shoot for while wrenching on the scooter,,,,

Just to make us feel better the Savage compared Royal Enfield Bullet 500

Bullet,  418lbs bike + 210 lbs rider=~630lbs
stock power (27.2/30.4 ) 23.16 lbs per horsepower and 20.7 lbs per foot of torque

Our little Savage would need "only" 26 hp and 28 ft lbs of torque
(no spread sheets were used in the make of this post)

All your math doesn't mean dyck in the real world. While a sporty has more power it also has more weight and needs more brake to slow it. While the sporty might pull me at the end of a straight they are a handful in the corners and if your not drifting the sporty thru the turns you would never come close to to keeping pace with my tracker. On a tight country road ain't very many sportsters gonna leave me behind till the road straightens out and even fewer riders want or can ride a sportster on the edge.i know I own both. Thumpers rule the back roads.

I am new to this board I am not new bikes or trucks...

The " Numbers" are a away of trying to express what and why bike, truck, chainsaw performs or "feels" the way it does.

There is a great deal more "data" out there. From gear ratios and power bands of the motor, flywheel wheel weight...

But there is a limited to the interest a reader will have in a post.

The post simply compared 3 common bikes to the Ls650 and in the most basic of terms, weight, horsepower, Torque

The goal is to define what performance goals are and how they compair with similar bikes  Cool

The LS650 is a big single with 60’s & 70’s technology, so expect performance levels similar to singles of the 50’s 60’s and 70’s.  This holds true for a stock or modified engine.
I had a ‘56 BSA Goldstar 500 years ago; it was a purpose built racing bike, and produced in 45-50 hp range.  If you want more torgue & power it is available for some work and $$.  If you do the mods to the engine you should be in that ballpark.
If you do so you should also upgrade the suspension and brakes as well; it is safer.

It might seem like it was 500 years ago - but it likely was less than that! Wink

My Thumpy eats stock Sportys for breakfast on the backroads.

But the problem with 80+ mph riding for this bike is safely slowing it. The OEM brakes are mostly ineffective at those speeds. And upgrade options are few and far between with the majority requiring fabrications.

IMO you're better of starting with a bike that already has the braking and suspension performance in place already.

Philthy,
Have you seen the brake upgrade kit with the R6 caliper and larger rotor offered on the list a while ago? Put one on mine Smiley
