 My interpretation is he is saying that in comparison to gun related murder the "worst case" scenario is: "....you go to the hospital, get bandaged up and you're good to go....." versus being killed in a robbery because so many criminals posses guns.

 The average person in my experience will turn over their possessions carried on them before they will willfully kill the assailant given the option.  This comes from hundreds of CCW practical application scenarios among civilian and weapon retention courses with LE and Military.
