Ok, So 1st let me say we might be drifting a bit off topic. Not for me because this all comes back around to what Im doing, but if this should be in another thread somewhere Mods please let me know. Im content to stay here rather than move around your forum and get into trouble somehow. But I have no issue if you want to use your mad mod skills to put me where I wont bother anyone.

youzguyz..
I looked at your pics and visited the PGR link. What your group does is wonderful. Well done! I was esp moved by the "unattended"  missions. Is that right? When the vets have no one. I wonder how much that happens here. This is a very rural community. small town stuff. Very small towns.
Are there still a lot of funeral protests going on now? or has that settled down some? Just curious. I dont watch a lot of news...
I have a few questions, maybe not pertaining to flags at the moment but if your willing to answer I would be grateful. I really want to make a good impression when I meet with whoever my local ALR is. Best way to do that is know some stuff and not ask a lot of stupid questions. So can I ask you? I dont want to be a pest.
Heres a couple..
Is it unusual for women to escort or do missions? I guess Im asking whats proper. I didnt see any in the pics on your page.
and I have a few questions about vests and patches but Im not sure if its the same "rules" between the 2 groups. Not so much placement more about.. lets say earning them, wearing them? I guess. For example if I do get into the ALR do I get to wear a patch or are there things I have to do 1st? I dont know and Yeah thats probably a stupid question.  Its all about etiquette that I ask these things. I mean theres a lot to this. Im just trying to get a handle on some of the basics for now.
Are you also an ALR and are there any here? (Its good to know who to suck up to right from the beginning. Just kidding. Kinda.  Wink ) I joke sometimes but thats just me Im very serious about all this.

Also, if theres anyone else reading this... Please feel free to join in if you have something to add. Im listening.

I will try to answer your question in order asked:
"Unattended" means that the county could not locate any next of kin, and govt records showed that this person was a veteran with and honorable discharge.  As such, he has the right to a military funeral and internment at a National Cemetery.  Quite often, they are homeless as well.
Usually, the missions are well attended by various Veteran groups.
The Bexar County Veterans Service Officer is the one who asks the PGR to attend these services.
The PGR does NOT attend a service or do an escort unless specifically requested by the family "authorized point of contact".

Funeral protests are very rare now.  After that started happening, Texas put laws into place that pretty much made it impossible anyway.
Missions are mostly for family support and to show honor and respect for the veteran.

Women do attend.  We have female Ride Captains and Flag Captains as well.  All you need is respect.
I attend a lot more PGR missions than indicated on my FB page.
To get a better idea of the volume and get more info and pictures here is a link to the San Antonio PGR Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/SAPGR/

About vests and patches:
PGR has no rules or guidelines.  However, you may be asked to cover a patch that is really vulgar.  Never noticed it to happen though.
There are no patches to "earn" for the PGR.  Some people put on patches from the PGR store.  Some just use the vest they have "as is".  Some have vests just for PGR, and a different vest for other times.
ALR: no clue.  I am a member of American Legion post 593, but not the post's ALR.  Many of our riders in the PGR belong to ALR from one post or another.  And from what I heard, each ALR does things a bit differently.
General:  Not a "rule", but a good idea.  If you put on a US Flag patch should go on the left side and be the highest patch on that side.
Look through the pictures on the FB page for examples of what people do.

It is very nice for you to be so complementary about what I do with the PGR, but, not needed.  Make me feel a bit self conscious.
"Do what you can, when you can" is a motto you may hear.  That is what I do.

Thank you for moving this.

Didnt mean to make you feel self conscious.  Its just I've heard about alot of the great things you all do and I am so happy and honored to meet someone from your group.
Small town stuff here I dont even know if we have any PGR members locally. I'm still trying to meet an ALR. I'm not sure how many of those we have.
Our Legion post 887 only has a few vets now from WW2 and Korea.  The Riders post is in the next town over.   Trying to be patient as I wait for someone to contact me....

I did find the handbook for ALR and have looked over the "uniform " code. Vest, white button shirt, black beret, dark pants. I really want to dress right and look sharp for the parades. Theres a placement chart in the book for the patches etc but not much about when you can wear it. The beret, that's different. That's only for when your at ceremony. It says nothing about the vest except dos and dont of patch placement.  I'm curious when/if I do get a patch on my vest if I can wear my vest while I'm out riding or if that too is only for ceremony. But that book also said what you did, that every post does it's own thing. Making it difficult to go into this well informed.

Hard to believe I've had my own bike only since April and I'm already meeting cool people and attempting to do new things. I'm not a social person. I tend to favor the "hermit" lifestyle. So I'm taking some pretty big leaps here.
I know I'm not ready for long rides or big groups yet. That's why I'm focusing on parades right now. Keeping my goals within my riding capabilities.
