Mixture screw has no effect
09/02/19 at 08:30:08
Have a ‘97 with a short megaphone muff, and the cheap and easy air cleaner mod as well as the white spacer mod. Cleaned the carb and installed a 152.5 main and a 52.5 w/bleed holes pilot jet.
Started right up and runs pretty good with no back fires but after warming up good it will die and not restart till cool again. Turning the mixture screw in or out had no effect. I then removed the 52.5 bh and replaced with a 50 pilot jet but the mixture screw still has no effect..
What am I missing? Have read most of the posts but can’t find the answer.
Need help!

Gotta set the idle speed down low, else other passages will be keeping the engine supplied with enough gas to hide the little effect of the air mix.
Remember to have it at full operating temperature, go for a twenty minute ride, and don't let it sit at idle on the sidestand for long. A 2x4 under it holds it more vertical..

What did you do for the spacer mod? what is your elevation above sea level? If your idling yhe bike more than a couple of minutes it's overheating.

I adjusted the idle as low as it would go when I tried to adjust the mixture. I am at 4500 ft elev.
If memory serves, I had previously reduced the white spacer to half thickness, i would have to recheck to make certain,
I am aware of the overheating problem at low idle.

It's not overheating so much as low oil flow to the cam.
And you can use a fan.
